Chandigarh, 28 August: The NSS units of Mehr Chand Mahajan DAV College for Women organised an orientation session to welcome and guide the newly enrolled NSS volunteers. The session familiarised the students with the vision and mission of the National Service Scheme, code of conduct, regular and special activities, as well as the process of registration on MyBharat Portal.

Adding a meaningful dimension to the day, the ‘NSS Herbal Garden’- an eco-conscious initiative created in collaboration with the college’s Eco Club- Parivesh, was inaugurated by Officiating Principal Ms. Neena Sharma. Each volunteer was entrusted with an individual flowering bed, offering them hands-on exposure to vegetation, horticulture practices, and botanical conservation. The garden, enriched with medicinal and aromatic plants such as kapoor tulsi, lemongrass, citronella, aloe vera, shatavari, brahmi, haldi, tulsi, pudina, and stevia, was established with the support of the Department of Forest and Wildlife, Chandigarh Administration in terms of providing saplings, along with contributions from the volunteers themselves. This initiative not only promotes ecological awareness but also seeks to integrate environmental education into academic life. Volunteers also pledged to ensure the garden’s upkeep and further development.

Addressing the volunteers, Ms. Neena Sharma emphasised the transformative impact of social and community service. She urged the students to carry forward the spirit of NSS with dedication and compassion, reminding them that true service lies in working selflessly for the welfare of others. Her inspiring words motivated the young changemakers to commit themselves wholeheartedly to both societal betterment and environmental stewardship.
