MC Chandigarh Promotes Water Conservation through pamphlet distribution under Jal Sanchay Jan Bhaagidari initiative

Chandigarh, May 7-: As part of the ongoing Jal Shakti Abhiyan: Catch the Rain initiative 2025, under the theme “Jal Sanchay, Jan Bhagidari, Jan Jagrukta Ki Ore”, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh has actively engaged the community by distributing informative pamphlets focused on Rainwater Harvesting (RWH), water conservation techniques, and the importance of regular cleaning and maintenance of RWH systems.

In an effort to raise awareness among the younger generation from 1st May to 7th May, pamphlets were distributed in educational institutions including Panjab University and D.A.V. School, Sector 15. These materials aim to educate students about practical methods to conserve water and emphasize the importance of sustainable water management.

Further extending the outreach, MC Chandigarh also conducted pamphlet distribution drives in various market areas, directly interacting with the public to share valuable information on the upkeep of rainwater harvesting structures and the broader goals of the Jal Shakti Abhiyan.

While speaking about the initiative, Sh. Amit Kumar, IAS, Commissioner, MC Chandigarh said that by instilling awareness at the grassroots level, the initiative seeks to empower citizens—especially the youth—to become active participants in water conservation and environmental sustainability.

Revision of Property Tax Rates and Rebate

Chandigarh, May 7:- In accordance with Notification No. 5062-68 dated 31.03.2025 issued by the Chandigarh Administration, the property tax rate on commercial and industrial properties was initially revised from 3% to 6% of the Annual Rateable Value (ARV) and the property tax on residential lands and buildings was also revised to three times from the rates specified in the Chandigarh Administration Notification dated 16.03.2020. Subsequently, vide Notification No. C-499835-FII(8)-2025/6401 dated 23.04.2025, in partial modification of the earlier notification, the revised tax rate on commercial and industrial properties has now been amended from 6% to 5% of the ARV. The property tax on residential lands and buildings has also increased two times as per the latest Notification.

While speaking on the issue, Sh. Amit Kumar, IAS, Commissioner, MC, Chandigarh said that at present, in Chandigarh, approximately 31,000 properties are assessed under Commercial Property Tax, while around 1.08 lakh properties fall under Residential Property Tax in the Union Territory of Chandigarh. Approximately 31000 properties are charged Commercial property tax and around 1.08 lac houses are assessed for residential property tax.

He said that residential property owners can avail a 20% rebate, while commercial property owners receive a 10% rebate by paying their property tax through all mode of payment during 1.4.2025 to 31.5.2025 except cheque and DD mode acceptable upto 25.05.2025.

The last revision in the property tax structure was undertaken in the year 2020.

The Commissioner further said that these revisions are a significant step towards ensuring enhanced revenue generation, improved service delivery, and greater financial autonomy for the Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh. The demand notices, reflecting the current year property tax and applicable arrears, are currently being issued to all the owners of Commercial, Industrial, Institutional, Government and Residential land and buildings.

He appealed all the property owners to check their current demand along with arrears on the official E-Sampark portal and urged them to ensure timely payment of property tax within the stipulated rebate period in order to avail the applicable rebate benefits.
