Residents to get relief from open drains and unhygienic conditions: Energy Minister Anil Vij
Storm water drainage system already proving beneficial in Sadar area
Chandigarh, March 7: Haryana’s Energy, Transport and Labour Minister Sh. Anil Vij said that the storm water drainage system in Ambala Cantonment will be further strengthened to improve the city’s water drainage infrastructure. He said that the system has already been successfully implemented in the Sadar area, where residents are benefiting significantly. Now, the remaining parts of Ambala Cantonment will also be covered under the project with an extensive drainage pipeline network.
The project will be executed in two phases. Under the first phase, approval has been granted to lay an 89-kilometre-long storm water pipeline network at an estimated cost of ₹58 crores. The second phase of the project is also expected to receive approval soon.
Sh. Anil Vij was reviewing the progress and planning of the storm water drainage project for Ambala Cantonment today at his residence with officials of the Public Health Engineering Department.
Pipeline to be laid in several areas
The Energy Minister said that under the first phase, storm water pipelines will be laid in BC Bazaar, Lalkurti, Outer Large Road (from the Electricity Board Office to SD Vidya School), Tribune Colony, Govind Nagar, Housing Board Colony, Subhash Colony, Kasturba Colony, and several other areas. The plan has already been prepared and work on the ground is expected to begin soon. He said the project will bring a significant transformation in these colonies and surrounding areas. Open drains will be closed and replaced with underground pipelines, which will not only improve water drainage during the rainy season but also provide major relief from unhygienic conditions caused by open drains, thereby improving the overall quality of life for residents.
Similarly, under the second phase, storm water drainage pipelines will be laid in all colonies located on the other side of Jagadhri Road, from Mahesh Nagar up to Defence Colony, which lies at the far end of the area. He added that the department has already prepared the plan, and government approval is expected shortly. During the meeting, the Energy Minister held a detailed discussion and review with departmental officials regarding the project. SE Arvind Rohilla and XEN Harbhajan Singh of the Public Health Engineering Department, along with other officials, were present on the occasion.
Storm water system already successful in Sadar area
Due to the efforts of Energy Minister Anil Vij, the storm water drainage pipeline has already been installed in the Sadar Bazaar area, which has greatly benefited residents. In this area, nearly 144 major and minor drains up to the 12 Cross Road have been made underground through the storm water pipeline system. The main Central Drain of the Sadar area has also been covered and converted into an underground system through the project. As a result, water drainage during the rainy season has improved considerably. The underground drainage has also helped reduce problems related to garbage, flies and mosquitoes, leading to improved sanitation and cleanliness in the area.
