Chandigarh, September 9:Australian High Commissioner to India Philip Green and Second Secretary Orson Pasi today called on Punjab BJP president Kewal Singh Dhillon in Chandigarh. The meeting covered a range of issues concerning the growing ties between India and Australia, with particular focus on the relationship between Punjab and Australia.
Dhillon said the discussions focussed on the safety and welfare of the Punjabi community, Sikhs and students living in Australia, besides issues being faced by them. He said a large number of Punjabi youth travelled abroad for education and employment opportunities and their safety, dignity and well-being remained a matter of great importance for Punjab.
He said the relationship between Punjab and Australia was not confined to diplomatic ties, with the Punjabi diaspora playing a significant role in bringing the people of the two countries closer. The discussions also covered Punjab’s rich historical heritage, culture, development journey and the contribution of the Punjabi diaspora across the world.
Dhillon said Punjabis were known for their hard work and integrity and had made a mark in various fields in Australia. The Punjabi community in Australia, he added, had emerged as a strong bridge of friendship and cooperation between the two countries.
He said India-Australia relations were steadily strengthening and the Punjabi community was making a constructive contribution towards deepening these ties. He expressed hope that cooperation between Punjab and Australia would expand further in the areas of education, youth, skill development, investment and people-to-people exchanges.

Dr. Ambedkar statue desecration in Ludhiana deplorable: Kewal Singh Dhillon
Chandigarh, September 9:Strongly condemning the desecration of the statue of Bharat Ratna Dr BR Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution, in Ludhiana, Punjab BJP president Kewal Singh Dhillon on Wednesday termed the incident “deeply unfortunate and serious”.
Dhillon said the insult to Dr Ambedkar’s statue was not merely an attack on a statue but an affront to the Constitution, constitutional values and the sentiments of millions of people. He said such incidents could create tension and disturb social harmony, and urged the state government to deal with the matter with utmost seriousness.
He said the law and order situation in Punjab was becoming increasingly worrisome. “If the statue of a towering personality like Dr Ambedkar is not safe under the AAP government, it raises serious questions over the state of law and order and the functioning of the administration,” he said.
Dhillon urged the Punjab Government to identify and arrest those responsible without delay. He said stringent action should be taken against the accused in accordance with law so that no one dared to indulge in such an act in the future.
The Punjab BJP president said the party remained committed to upholding the dignity of Dr Ambedkar, the sanctity of the Constitution and social harmony. He urged the government to ensure a fair and speedy investigation and bring the culprits to justice.
