Chandigarh, 22 August: On the fifth day of the ongoing Induction Week, the Health Committee of Mehr Chand Mahajan DAV College for Women, under the aegis of the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), organised an insightful session on ‘Women’s Mental Health’. The resource person for the session was Dr. Smriti Mahajan, Consultant Psychiatrist, Healing Hospital, Sector 34, Chandigarh.

Dr. Mahajan began by explaining the meaning and scope of mental health and underscored the critical importance of women’s mental well-being. Citing statistics that reveal significantly poorer mental health outcomes among women, she highlighted the interplay of biological, psychological, social, and financial factors that create gender-based disparities. She also drew attention to pressing issues such as domestic violence, abuse, gender-based violence, body image concerns, and systemic challenges that contribute to the higher prevalence of mental disorders among women. Stressing the need for sensitisation initiatives, attitudinal change, and awareness, Dr. Mahajan emphasised the role of education, mental self-care practices, and supportive environments in strengthening women’s mental health.

Officiating Principal Ms. Neena Sharma commended the Health Committee for organising such a relevant and empowering session. She remarked that discussions on women’s mental health are essential for creating a more inclusive, supportive, and aware society, while also equipping young women to prioritise their mental well-being alongside their personal and professional aspirations.
