Chandigarh,08.05.19-Dr Hardev Singh Coonar was Consultant at Dental Department at PGI Chandigarh, He left PGI in early seventies and shifted to UK and became Consultant Oral Surgeon, Eastman Dental & Hammersmith Hospital, London UK and later Co-founded the Charitable Dental and Pain Clinic at his native Village Hansali, Distt Patiala, Punjab, India

Dr Hardev Singh Coonar had a glittering career in Dentistry and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in both India and UK where he was a master surgeon and teacher. Coming from a medical, military and farming family of Hansali he qualified from the first batch of Punjab Govt. Dental College, Amritsar. He was then commissioned into the Indian Army Dental Services. He obtained the Fellowship in Dental Surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons in England & worked at hospitals in India, Denmark, London, UK and also Massachusetts General Hospital affiliated with Harvard University, USA. As consultant in London he developed aspects of oral implantology and major cancer and trauma surgery. He also Conducted the Hands On Courses on Implantology at Oral Health Sciences Centre at PGI in 1999-2000

He retained close links with India, visiting it regularly with his brother late Dr. Pritam Singh Coonar who had brought him up after the early death of their father. They founded the Dental and Pain relief Clinic in Hansali which is supported by both the local Gurudwara of the village as well as Rotary International.

After retirement, he and his wife became very sociable, travelled widely and enjoyed being involved in Rotary and other charities.

His wife Sarla Coonar who was an Orthodontist passed away on 28.6.2018. They had met as teenagers when they joined the 1st class of the Amritsar Dental College. He died when visiting Solan a place that he dearly loved and had spent time in childhood.

He is survived by his son who is the head of Cardio Thoracic Surgery in Cambridge, UK and a daughter who is an orthodontist in London, UK. He has 2 nephews also doctors……
