7 Days Short Term Course concluded at PU
A seven days’ short term course/ faculty development programme under the aegis
of UGC- HRDC of Panjab University concluded at the Department of Mathematics, Panjab
University, Chandigarh. The theme of the course titled “MATHEMATICAL COMPUTATIONAL
SKILLS: A PRACTICAL APPROACH” was inaugurated by Prof. R J Hans Gill on Jan 08, 2020.
Twenty faculty members from colleges/ universities of Chandigarh, Punjab, Haryana and
Odisha got benefitted from this course. The objective of this course was to introduce
the numerical programming techniques using commercially/free available mathematical
software packages and programming languages. Resource persons from IIT Ropar, Guru
Nanak Dev University, Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology and JIIT Noida
delivered expert lectures on the theme. On this occasion, Prof. SK Tomar (Honorary
Director - HRDC), Dr. Jayanti Dutta (Deputy Director- HRDC) and Prof. Gurmeet K Bakshi
(Chairperson, Department of Mathematics) were present. The course was coordinated by
Dr. Gagandeep Singh and Dr. Dilbag Singh of Mathematics Department.

Workshop on Robotics starts at UIET
One Week Workshop on “ROBOTICS kicked off at University Institute of Engineering and
Technology (UIET), Panjab University Chandigarh, here today. This is being organized by
AICTE Training & Learning (ATAL).
Prof. Savita Gupta, Director UIET, while inaugurating the workshop informed that this
programme is interdisciplinary in nature and the basic objective of this workshop is to
impart knowledge on various applications of Robotics in different branches of
Engineering, applied sciences, art, history medicine and architecture. This program
intends to provide a platform for participants from various disciplines to interact
with the experts and upgrade their knowledge on design and manufacturing of Robots
through expert lectures and hands-on-training.
A total of more than 135 participants had applied for the course and finally 62
participants from AICTE approved institutes have been selected for this 5-day workshop
from 13-17th January 2020. Participants are faculty and research scholars of
different engineering and science disciplines from various universities and colleges
like Central University of Punjab, H.P. University, Punjab Engineering College, as well
as Panjab University.
The course coordinators, Prof. Harmesh Kansal and Mr. Harbhinder Singh from Mechanical
Engineering, UIET, welcomed the participants and briefed about how this workshop will
help in enriching the technical & research skills of academicians and newcomers.

The Valedictory Programme of the 125th Orientation Course, on in-service
training programme for faculty of Colleges and Universities was held in the Panjab
University Campus with 35 teachers receiving their completion certificates.

Professor R.K. Kohli, Vice-Chancellor, Central University of Punjab, Bathinda,
in his valedictory address spoke about the challenges of teaching profession. This is
one of the most difficult professions, he said, and teachers would do well to keep the
welfare of the country before themselves, to find goodness in the institutes where they
are working and to love their profession above all. Professor Kohli assured the
teachers that we should not keep waiting for situations to be in our favour, but must
take the initiatives.

Professor S.K. Tomar, Honorary Director, UGC-Human Resource Development Centre,
Panjab University, Chandigarh interacted with the participants. He asked them to be in
contact with the HRDC in order to be updated about professional development programmes
and policies.
Pema C. Raj, Assistant Professor in English, Sikkim Institute of Higher
Education, Gangtok one of the participants said that the course has opened a new vista
for the new teachers. Participants have really learnt novel techniques of pedagogy and
are now ready to implement them and experiment in their respective classrooms.

Workshop on Road Safety and Traffic Awareness conducted at UIET
Chandigarh Traffic Police team led by DSP Sh. Jaswinder Singh conducted a workshop on
Road Safety and Traffic Awareness at University Institute of Engineering and
Technology(UIET), Panjab University. The event witnessed huge participation by more
than 300 students and faculty members. The topics under discussion included the amended
Motor Vehicle Act 2019, road traffic sense, do’s and don’ts while driving, knowledge
about road signages, and several traffic related informative videos. The event was
highly interactive and informative. 4 students of UIET- Charu Kaushik, Kapish Mittal,
Ritika and Ritu, were awarded a prize by Chandigarh Traffic Police in traffic quiz.
Traffic Marshal Vishal Kapoor was part of the 1-day workshop conducted under the
leadership of Director UIET, Prof. Savita Gupta and with the contribution of Prof.
Gurdeep Singh, Dr. Naveen Gupta, Prof. Kavita, Dr. Hitesh Kapoor and Dr. Amandeep Verma
of Panjab University.

UILS students placed at Bhagwati & Associates

students of University Institute of Legal Studies (UILS), Panjab University,
Chandigarh, here today, with an annual package of 2.16 lakhs as a part of the placement
drive ‘NEGOTIUM’ which was organized by the Dr. Jasneet Kaur Walia under the aegis of
Career Development Cell at UILS.

The Director of the Bhagwati & Associates which came for the first time for recruitment
drive, interacted with the final year students at UILS and out of which 18 students
were shortlisted on the basis of their CVs and three were finalized on the basis of
interview, namely Jaya Gangwal, Tanroop Kaur and Meher Nagpal. The job offers were

Award Ceremony at PU
Dr. Navneet Kaur, Professor, Department of Chemistry, Panjab
University, Chandigarh was awarded with Professor D. V. S. Jain
Research Award (2018) which includes a citation and award amount of
Rs. 30,000 while Dr. Nishima Wangoo, Assistant Professor from
University Institute of Engineering & Technology, PU was awarded with
Smt. Prem Lata Jain Research Award (2018) which included a citation
and award amount of Rs. 15,000. These awards were presented by Smt.
Prem Lata Jain, during the 4th Best Research Award Ceremony, organized
by Department of Chemistry, on behalf of Smt. Prem Lata and Professor
D V S Jain Research Foundation, here today.

Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, Panjab University, Chandigarh
congratulated the awardees, and exhorted other faculty members and
young researchers to carry out meaningful research, not only for wider
scientific reach but also for societal impact. PU VC expressed
gratitude and appreciation towards the generous contribution of Rs. 50
lakhs endowment fund donated by Prof. Jain’s family. Prof. Raj Kumar
believes that such endowment funds will really support and accelerate
the university research activities in multifaceted ways. Smt. Jain
also bestowed upon the Best Researcher and Best Publication awardees.

The six Best Publication awards for the year 2018, for publication of
outstanding research articles with impact factor more than 5.0, were
presented to Prof. Parveen Rishi (Microbiology), Dr. Nishima Wangoo
(Chemsitry), Prof. G. R. Chaudhary (Chemistry), Dr. Rohit Kumar Sharma
(Chemistry) and Prof. Navneet Kaur (Chemistry). The best publication
awards included a citation and award amount of Rs. 5,000 for each
awardee. The certificates of appreciation for publishing high impact
papers in the year 2018 were bestowed upon Dr. Savita Chaudhary
(Chemistry), Prof. Rajat Sandhir (Biochemistry), Prof. Amarjit Singh
Naura (Biochemistry), Dr. Vijayata Chadha (Nuclear Medicine) and Dr.
P. Natarajan (Chemsitry).

Earlier, Prof. K. N. Singh, Chairman briefed about the genesis
objectives of Smt. Prem Lata and Professor D V S Jain Research
Foundation. This foundation has been created based on the endowment
fund donated by Professor D.V.S. Jain. The main objective of this
foundation is to promote and nurture scientific research in Panjab
University. The foundation has initiated scientific programs such as
Best Researcher Awards, Best Publication Awards, Bright-Begin Research
Grant, Conceptual Consolidation in Innovative Areas Lecture Series,
Fellowships for research scholars and Book fund.

The participants remembered and paid homage to
Prof. D.V.S. Jain who passed away in October 2019.
