Prof. A D Ahluwalia has been invited to deliver a key note address on the topic of "Mass Geoscience
Awareness and Communication could have saved thousands killed in Himalayan flash Floods
and Asian Tsunami" in an international conference on Geoethics from October 12th to 18th

CHANDIGARH, October 9, 2013
Former Head of the Department of Geology Department, Panjab University (PU) & Chairman
of Indian Chapter International Association of Geoethics (IAGETH), Prof. A D Ahluwalia
has been invited to deliver a key note address on the topic of "Mass Geoscience
Awareness and Communication could have saved thousands killed in Himalayan flash Floods
and Asian Tsunami" in an international conference on Geoethics from October 12th to 18th
at Pribram, Czech Republic.
Prof. A D Ahluwalia has been invited by Vice President Association of Geoscientists for
International Development AGID & Head AGID Working Group for Geoethics, Dr Vaclav Nemec
to deliver to address the international conference on geoethics.
Dr Ahluwalia who has been Member US NC & OPC, International Year of Planet Earth and is
of the view that devastation could have been much less if there was intensive use of
remote sensing and grass root awareness at all levels. Our own SAR Technology Satellites
are capable on monitoring vulnerable areas day & night and even in cloudy conditions.
According to Ahluwalia, while flash flood & tsunami warnings come as SMS in USA, we
remain ignorant even after disaster and complete information remains locked up in the
computers or official reports and seldom reaches the end user i.e. the common people.
Emphasis should be shifted from post disaster relief, dead body count and retrieval etc
to pre-emptive protection through timely warnings given in effective and credible manner
so that our people take these seriously and save themselves and others. This requires a
mindset change in our system which is so tuned to getting caught napping.
