Chandigarh, October 8, 2026: The Chandigarh Administration organised a Yakshagana cultural programme, “Shri Devi Mahatme,” at Tagore Theatre, Sector 18, Chandigarh, today under the Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat initiative. Shri Gulab Chand Kataria, Hon’ble Governor of Punjab and Administrator, U.T. Chandigarh, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.

Shri Hiriadka Rajesh Prasad, Chief Secretary, U.T. Chandigarh, and Shri K. A. P. Sinha, Chief Secretary, Punjab, attended the programme as special guests. Other senior officers of the Chandigarh Administration were also present.

Presented by Yakshadhruva Patla Foundation, Mangaluru, the programme featured artists who had travelled from Mangaluru. Ahead of the upcoming Navratri festival, the artists brought alive the Mahishasur Vadh episode, depicting Goddess Durga’s victory over Mahishasur through mesmerising performances.

A special highlight of the programme was the adaptation of the play into Hindi for the Chandigarh audience. This enabled the audience to connect closely with the story while experiencing the rich traditions of Yakshagana. The expressive performances, elaborate costumes, music and powerful storytelling captivated those present.

Addressing the gathering, Shri Kataria said that the play depicts the timeless message of the victory of good over evil. He appreciated the artists for their performances and for specially adapting the production into Hindi to make it accessible to the audience.

The Administrator observed that such cultural exchanges under Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat help strengthen bonds among different regions and promote appreciation of India’s diverse cultural heritage. He expressed hope that many more such plays and cultural programmes would be organised in Chandigarh in the future.
