Chandigarh, September 5, 2026:The Governor of Punjab and Administrator, U.T. Chandigarh, Shri Gulab Chand Kataria, today honoured teachers for their outstanding contribution to education and nation-building at a special Teachers’ Day celebration organised by the Department of School Education, Chandigarh Administration. Referring to former President of India Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the Administrator said that Teachers’ Day is a tribute to the invaluable contribution of teachers in shaping individuals, society and the nation.

The event was attended by Secretary Education Ms. Prerna Puri; Director, School Education, Shri Nitish Singla; senior officers of the Education Department, teachers, awardees, students and other dignitaries.

A total of 16 teachers received State Awards and six teachers were presented Commendation Certificates in recognition of their dedication, innovation and contribution to improving the quality of school education. Ms. Monika Chawla, Principal, St. Joseph’s Senior Secondary School, Sector 44, and Shri Ramesh Sharma received Special Recognition Awards, while Ms. Parveen Kumari, a National Award recipient of the previous year, was also honoured.

A Lifetime Contribution to School Education Award was conferred upon Ms. Bindu Arora, Deputy Director, School Education, Chandigarh Administration, for her distinguished and sustained contribution to the field of education.

Shri Ravi Kumar Jaiswal, Trained Graduate Teacher (Science), Government Model High School, Maloya Colony, Chandigarh, was being selected for the prestigious National Teachers’ Award 2026. Recognised for his innovative approach to science education, he developed a 3D dome theatre using waste materials to make learning more engaging and experiential for students.

Addressing the gathering, Shri Kataria described teachers as “silent nation-builders”, saying that their role goes far beyond imparting academic knowledge. Drawing upon the examples of Guru Vashisht and Acharya Chanakya, he said that a true teacher shapes character, instils values and prepares students to become responsible citizens.

The Administrator said that education must prepare children not merely for examinations but for life. He called upon teachers to focus on skill-based and quality education while developing critical thinking, creativity, problem-solving abilities, confidence and self-reliance among students.

Highlighting the growing role of technology, Shri Kataria said teachers should help students use technology efficiently, responsibly and purposefully, making it a tool for learning, innovation and empowerment.

“A teacher transforms lives. Every doctor, engineer, scientist, administrator, entrepreneur and professional has been shaped by a teacher at some point in life,” Shri Kataria said, underscoring the foundational role of teachers in building individuals and institutions.

Recalling the revered position of the Guru in Indian tradition, the Administrator said that the teacher is regarded as one who illuminates the path of knowledge, values and righteousness.

Congratulating the awardees, Shri Kataria appreciated their dedication, innovation and commitment and urged them to continue inspiring students through knowledge, values, skills, compassion and exemplary conduct.

The celebration also showcased the creativity and talent of the teaching fraternity through group song, group dance and a skit presented by teachers.

The Department of School Education reiterated its commitment to quality education, skill development, innovation, technology-enabled learning and holistic development of students, with teachers continuing to play a central role in building a progressive, capable and self-reliant society.
