Chandigarh, 14 August: As part of the ongoing four-day celebrations leading up to Independence Day 2026, Mehr Chand Mahajan DAV College for Women, organised a series of engaging programmes that blended historical remembrance, patriotic creativity and social awareness. The events included a moving documentary on the Partition of India, a Patriotic Embroidery Competition titled ‘Aazadi Ke Rang, Handloom Ke Sang’, and a quiz competition on the theme “No Nasha Nation”.
The NSS Units of the college organised screening of a documentary on the Partition of India, created by NSS volunteers under the guidance of the Programme Officers. Using archival footage, historical speeches and personal accounts, the documentary brought alive the painful memories of Partition. Moving beyond dates and statistics, the documentary foregrounded the human experiences behind one of the most significant events in India’s history. Adding a creative dimension to the pre-Independence Day celebrations, the NSS units also organised patriotic embroidery competition titled ‘Aazadi Ke Rang, Handloom Ke Sang’. The participants created intricate handloom-based embroidery designs inspired by the spirit of Independence, the colours of the national flag, patriotic symbols and themes of freedom. Through their artwork, the participants paid tribute to India’s freedom fighters while celebrating the country’s rich tradition of craftsmanship. Victory Against Drug Abuse (VADA) Club organised a Quiz Competition on ‘No Nasha Nation’ to sensitise students to the harmful effects of drug abuse and reinforce the message of a healthy and drug-free society. College alumna Ms. Ekum Dhillon served as the Quiz Master and resource person, conducting the competition in an engaging and interactive manner. The winning teams were felicitated with cash prizes for their outstanding performance.

Officiating Principal Ms. Neena Sharma lauded the efforts of the NSS units and VADA Club, and appreciated the enthusiastic participation of the students. She emphasised the importance of remembering the people, struggles and sacrifices that shaped India’s history while celebrating the freedom enjoyed today. She also urged students to remain vigilant against substance abuse, make responsible choices and contribute towards building a healthy, responsible and drug-free society.
