Chandigarh, August 10: Merely listening to spiritual thoughts by attending Satsang is not enough; rather, the true spiritual achievement lies in incorporating the devotion gained from Satsang into one’s life and conduct. He said that through remembrance of God (Simran), service to humanity, Satsang and humility, a person can unite his or her life with the Formless Almighty. These views were expressed by Sant Nirankari Mission, Delhi’s Central Knowledge Pracharak, Shri Inderjit Sharma Ji, while addressing thousands of devotees at a grand Satsang organized at Sant Nirankari Satsang Bhawan, Sector-30, Chandigarh.

Highlighting the purpose of human life, Shri Sharma Ji said that human beings have not come into this world merely for material achievements, but to realize the Almighty and move towards liberation. Referring to the teachings of Lord Mahavira, he said that liberation is attained by seeking refuge in the Guru. Explaining the difference between need and desire, he said that even after one’s needs are fulfilled, desires do not come to an end. Desire is like a fire that cannot be quenched even by all the wealth in the world. Therefore, one should free oneself from unnecessary desires, develop a sense of contentment and surrender, and follow the path of Satsang, Seva and Simran.

Explaining the importance of Satsang, he referred to an example given by Baba Gurbachan Singh Ji. He said that just as, after the dirt has been removed from a piece of cloth, it is also necessary to wash away the soap remaining in it, otherwise the soap may damage the cloth; similarly, after Satsang removes the impurities of the mind, it is equally important to eliminate the ego hidden within. Satsang develops divine qualities such as humility, patience, tolerance, compassion, affection and love, but one should never become egoistic even about these virtues.

Shri Sharma Ji said that a person should develop humility and tolerance in life like those reflected by a stone lying on the road and the earth itself. He said that the true meaning of spirituality is to bring positive transformation in one’s thoughts so that one can behave towards others with love, respect and tolerance. Merely appearing good externally is not enough; humility should also be reflected in one’s mind and thoughts.

Describing Simran as the foundation of spiritual life, Shri Sharma Ji said that Simran is not merely the repetition of words, but a process of continuously training the mind to remain focused on the Almighty through regular practice. Giving an example, he said that just as a small child learns to walk through repeated efforts and practice and eventually begins to run naturally, in the same way, through continuous practice of Simran, the mind gradually becomes calm, stable and focused. He urged the devotees to practise Simran regularly.

He explained that just as a person remains attentive to his work while performing daily activities, similarly, while fulfilling all the responsibilities of family life, one can keep one’s mind connected with the Formless Almighty. He said that while living in the world, it is necessary to fulfil professional, family and social responsibilities, but one should never forget the real spiritual goal of life. A householder’s life is not an obstacle on the spiritual path; rather, it provides an opportunity to practise devotion while fulfilling one’s responsibilities.

He said that one should continuously strive to keep the mind anchored in the Formless through meditation and Simran. Describing faith and surrender towards the Satguru as important foundations of spiritual life, he said that the Satguru of the present time guides human beings beyond external rituals and formalities and paves the way for experiencing the Divine within. He said that meditation is essential for stabilizing spiritual knowledge in life, and through meditation the mind attains concentration.

Shri Sharma Ji made a special appeal to the younger generation to make Satsang, Seva and Simran an integral part of their lives. He said that along with material progress, it is equally important to possess spiritual values. Qualities such as love, humility, tolerance and humanity give true beauty to life. He inspired the youth to make time for their spiritual life even amidst the busy routine of modern life.

Concluding his address, Shri Sharma Ji said that while living in the world, one should sincerely fulfil all responsibilities, maintain love towards family and society, but never forget the Formless Almighty. He appealed to the devotees to put into practice the thoughts they hear in Satsang and enrich their lives spiritually through continuous Simran, Seva and humility.
