CHANDIGARH,02.11.19-Professor Jagat Ram is an eye surgeon par excellence iconic teacher and an inspirational leader and an eminent citizen who from a very humble rural background has reached the pinnacle of his career. With his untiring efforts and highly focused goal oriented approach he is a perfect example of how one can achieve excellence and success with sheer hard work and dedication. Born in a small village in Himachal Pradesh, he has worked his way through the ladder of success, overcoming many challenges along the way. Recognizing his contributions to the society while in public service he was chosen to lead one of the most prestigious medical institutes of the country as the Director PGIMER Chandigarh in 2017. He is member of board of Governor of MCI since October 2018.

Prof Jagat Ram joined the PGI faculty in 1985 and rose to become a Professor of Ophthalmology. He received his MBBS degree from Indira Gandhi Medical College Shimla in 1978 followed by MS in Ophthalmology at PGI Chandigarh in June 1982. He was subsequently awarded the WHO Fellowship in the field of advanced phacoemulsification at Storm Eye Institute USA in 1993 to 1994. Crediting his talent he was awarded another fellowship in Pediatric Cataract Surgery in 1998 by the same Institute. Dr Jagat Ram was deputed by the Government of India as a Consultant Ophthalmologist with the Republic of Seychelles from 2003 to 05 a period during which he eliminated backlog of cataract blindness in this Island Nation.

Prof Ram introduced the technique of phacoemulsification in PGI in 1994 replacing the older technique of extracapsular cataract surgery. Year after year he operated blind patients and restored vision in them and in the last 39 years nearly 90,000 such patients have been benefitted by his surgical skills. Thus he is recognized internationally for his outstanding and exceptional surgical skills in the field of cataract surgery both in adults and children. Due to his efforts high quality cutting edge medical technology was made available for the masses at nominal cost. In addition he regularly offered free services as an eye surgeon in over 135 Relief and Screening Camps organized for neglected and extremely poor individuals.

Prof Ram was the only invited author from the Asia Pacific region to contribute a Complete Issue on Elimination of Cataract Blindness in the renowned journal Survey of Ophthalmology in 1999.

He is recipient of Most Prestigious Award Best of the Best Winner for New Surgical Techniques on Management of Double Crystalline Lens at American Society Cataract and Refractive Society held at San Francisco USA in April 2013. At this televised award ceremony the National Anthem of India was played at the bestowal ceremony of this most prestigious International honour. In a unique and rare honour again on May 9, 2016, he received the Best of the Best Award at New Orleans, USA at the American Society conference. Prof Jagat Ram also received one of the most prestigious Awards the Oscar of Paediatric Ophthalmology at the World Congress of Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus held at Barcelona in 2015. In 2018, he was again Winner of best surgical video at at American Society Cataract and Refractive Society held Washington DC for a surgical innovative video Management of Buphthalmos.

Prof Jagat Ram has initiated work on the three major projects with support and approval of the Government of India such as Mother Child Care and Neurosciences Centre at PGI Chandigarh and setting up the Satellite Centre at Una in Himachal Pradesh which will immensely benefit the patients from particularly from the hilly inaccessible regions. His efforts and negotiation has significantly brought down the cost of Implants for Orthopedic and Stents for cardiac patients at an affordable cost for the common man. He has also succeeded in channelizing the working of the overcrowded Emergency department by ensuring prompt management of patients by doctors and staff which has helped in reducing overall number of patients and the hospital stay.

As a researcher Prof Ram has placed PGI on the world map. He has contributed over 300 publications in reputed indexed National and International Medical Journals including the most reputed The New England Journal of Medicine and The Lancet. Dr Jagat Ram has completed over 40 research projects with National and International Collaborative support. A much sought after speaker both nationally and across the world Prof Ram has delivered over 415 lectures and orations on paediatric and age related cataract surgery. He is the author of several books and has written more than 45 book chapters. Prof Ram is truly an inspiration and best known for his untiring devotion to both in patient care and teaching.
