CHANDIGARH,14.01.20-PGI Orthopaedic Surgery team comprising of Prof Vijay G Goni, Dr Tanvir Samra, Dr Deepak, Dr Karan, Dr Pradeep and Dr Sumeet on 08th of January 2020, operated upon a 110 year old elderly lady giving her a new lease of life and enabling her to stand on her feet and walk again. This elderly lady had a fall at home and sustained fracture of right hip bone, which made her bedridden. These fractures in such elderly patients are a challenge to manage as the patients are very fragile and have various age-related complications. Delay and failure to treat them can be life threatening from complications due to bedridden condition. Main goal of this surgery is to provide a painless mobile and stable hip joint and to mobilize them early. PGI team became successful in achieving this goal. She is the oldest patient to undergo partial hip replacement in India and probably in Asia as per current search available online. The oldest person to undergo partial hip replacement in the world is 112 years patient from UK as per guinness book of world records. However not all the patients are considered safe for this surgery and not all the patients from elderly age group should be restrained from surgery. These patients need an efficient backup team including anesthetist and intensivist to handle them during anaesthesia and after surgery as they can deteriorate any time. Dr Tanvir, dynamic anaesthesia consultant managed the case very efficiently. The patient was made to stand the very next day and she is walking comfortably now. The whole team is happy that they got a chance to make this lady be able to go back to her routine activities what she used to perform prior to injury.
