MC’s Swachh Sawari Takes Donations on Wheels

Chandigarh, February 6:-Under the Swachh Bharat Mission, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh is successfully implementing its citizen-driven initiative “Swachh Sawari”, a unique Contribution on Wheels programme aimed at promoting sustainability, reuse, and social welfare across the city.

While speaking about the initiative, city Mayor Sh. Saurabh Joshi said that the Swachh Sawari initiative enables residents to donate old but usable items such as clothes, footwear, toys, books, and other household essentials directly from their doorsteps. The collected material is transported sector-wise to the MCC’s RRR (Reduce, Reuse & Recycle) Store, where it is refurbished and redistributed to the underprivileged through One Rupee Stores, making each item available at a nominal cost of just ₹1.

He said that this initiative truly embodies the spirit of “Aapke Ghar Se Unke Ghar Tak”, ensuring that unused household items are put to meaningful use while supporting needy sections of society. It also reinforces the principles of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle, encouraging responsible consumption and sustainable living among citizens.

The Mayor further said that In addition to social welfare, Swachh Sawari plays a vital role in spreading awareness about scientific waste management and the importance of segregation at source, motivating citizens to actively participate in keeping Chandigarh clean and environmentally sustainable.

He said that with active public participation and continued efforts by the Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh is strengthening its commitment towards cleanliness, environmental sustainability, and improved quality of life, while striving to achieve the top rank in the forthcoming Swachhata Survekshan.

MC Chandigarh conducts Swachhta awareness drive in Government Model Schools, Manimajra

Chandigarh, February 6:-As part of Swachh Survekshan 2026, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh organized an extensive cleanliness and environmental awareness campaign today at Government Model School, Pocket No. 6 and Government Model School, Pocket No. 10, Manimajra.

During the programme, officials of MCC sensitized teachers and students about the segregation of four types of waste and emphasized the importance of proper waste management at the source. They also created awareness about the harmful effects of single-use plastic and urged students to avoid its usage completely.

The students were educated on home composting techniques, highlighting how wet waste generated at households can be converted into useful compost. Special focus was laid on the concept of Triple R — Reduce, Reuse and Recycle, encouraging children to adopt sustainable practices in their daily lives.

Appealing to citizens to actively contribute towards making Chandigarh a No. 1 city in Swachh Rankings, the IEC team urged everyone to report instances of littering by clicking photographs along with location details and sharing them with the Municipal Corporation for necessary challan action against violators.

They further informed that the Municipal Corporation will soon launch a strict enforcement drive against banned plastic carry bags in Manimajra, and violators will be penalized heavily. They reiterated that no leniency will be shown towards those flouting the law.

It was also announced that similar awareness programmes will be conducted in all schools, markets and public places across Manimajra to strengthen public participation in cleanliness initiatives.

The programme witnessed active participation from Principal Ms. Neelam Sood (GMS Pocket 6), Principal Mr. Tarun (GMS Pocket 10), Ms. Shivani Gupta, teaching staff and students, who collectively pledged to support the Swachh Chandigarh mission.

MC Chandigarh reviews animal welfare measures at ABC Centre, Raipur Kalan; team of volunteers visits the centre

Chandigarh, February 6:-Reaffirming its commitment towards humane animal care and welfare, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh today facilitated a comprehensive visit of members of the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) and local animal welfare volunteers to the Animal Birth Control (ABC) Centre at Raipur Kalan.

The visiting delegation comprised Sh. Prem Garg and Sh. Satinder Siddhu, members of SPCA, along with Mrs. Neeru and her team of dedicated local animal lovers actively engaged in animal welfare activities across the city.

Dr. Himanshu Gupta, Joint Commissioner, and Dr. Gaurav Lakhanpal, Incharge of the ABC Centre, Raipur Kalan, were also present there to brief the delegation about the infrastructure, facilities and operational framework of the centre.

During the visit, the delegation carried out a thorough inspection of the ABC Centre and closely examined the procedures and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) being followed for animal birth control, post-operative care and overall management of stray dogs. Detailed discussions were held on strengthening animal welfare practices and ensuring transparency and accountability in the functioning of the centre.

The SPCA members and animal welfare volunteers suggested that a proper duty roster of staff and veterinary personnel be maintained and emphasized the need for effective CCTV surveillance to monitor operations round-the-clock, ensuring humane treatment of animals at all stages.

The delegation also suggested additional parameters for enhancing the welfare of dogs at the centre, including:

* Ensuring adequate post-operative care and recovery time for sterilized dogs
* Maintaining proper cleanliness, hygiene and disinfection protocols
* Availability of clean drinking water and nutritionally balanced food
* Regular health check-ups and prompt medical attention
* Proper record maintenance of animals admitted, treated and released
* Training and sensitization of staff towards compassionate handling of animals

Assuring full cooperation, Dr. Himanshu Gupta, Joint Commissioner, stated that the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh is fully committed to strengthening animal welfare mechanisms and will implement the suggestions and recommendations at the earliest in a phased and systematic manner. He added that regular monitoring and coordination with SPCA members and animal welfare groups will be ensured to maintain the highest standards of care.
He also reiterated that the ABC Centre is being continuously upgraded in line with prescribed guidelines and that the Corporation welcomes constructive feedback from stakeholders to further improve services.
