CHANDIGARH,24.09.2025-In a concerted effort to strengthen maternal and child health, the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) organized a special outpatient department (OPD) awareness session on antenatal and non-communicable disease (NCD) care for women under the national campaign “ Swasth Nari, Sashakt Parivar Abhiyaan.”
The session was led by Prof. Pooja Sikka, Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics , and focused on equipping women with the knowledge and practices essential for safe pregnancies. Today’s OPD witnessed an overwhelming response with 306 patients in Gynaecology and 132 in Obstetrics, reflecting the growing awareness and demand for maternal health services.
Prof. Pooja Sikka emphasized that pregnancy should be carefully planned, with women undergoing necessary tests before conception, as untreated conditions often worsen during pregnancy. She highlighted the importance of early registration, routine check-ups, proper nutrition, timely vaccination, preventive screenings, and medical interventions for the well-being of both mother and child.
Underpinning the need for awareness, Prof Pooja Sikka remarked, “Education and awareness play a critical role in preventing maternal and neonatal complications. Antenatal care is the foundation of safe pregnancies and healthy families. Through the ‘Swasth Nari, Sashakt Parivar Abhiyaan,’ we aim to empower women with knowledge and access to quality care, so every pregnancy becomes a journey of health and confidence.”
Addressing thyroid disorders , Prof. Sikka urged mothers to remain vigilant about symptoms and follow testing schedules as advised. She concluded with a reminder: “A healthy mother ensures a healthy child. Following medical advice, routine check-ups, and adopting lifestyle modifications can make pregnancies safer and healthier.”
Highlighting the broader goals of the campaign, Dr. Navneet Dhaliwal, Additional Professor, Department of Hospital Administration, PGIMER, stated, “The ‘Swasth Nari, Sashakt Parivar Abhiyaan’ is not just about improving maternal health—it is about strengthening families and communities.
