CHANDIGARH, 31.08.25-The month of August witnessed PGIMER becoming the epicentre of humanity’s most profound gesture—organ donation with three heart-touching instances, where families of patients with irreversible brain stem death rose above their grief to give the gift of life to nine organ failure patients counting their days and gift of sight to two corneal blind patients. With exemplary coordination,
PGIMER facilitated three Green Corridors for the seamless transfer of organs to matching recipients across different locations.
Prof. Vivek Lal , Director, PGIMER, expressed profound gratitude stating, “Each organ donation is a story of extraordinary courage and kindness. In these three instances, we witnessed families, in their darkest hour, turning their personal tragedy into a lifesaving mission for others. PGIMER salutes their noble spirit and reaffirms its commitment to strengthening organ donation in the region.”
The most recent and profoundly moving case happened on August 27, 2025, highlighting both tragedy and hope. A man in his fifties from Patiala, Punjab, who had sustained severe head injuries, was declared brain stem dead.
Demonstrating extraordinary courage and compassion, his family graciously consented to organ donation. His kidneys were successfully transplanted at PGIMER, while his heart was swiftly transported via a meticulously coordinated Green Corridor to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi, exemplifying seamless logistical excellence. His liver was allocated to Max Hospital, Saket; although it could not be utilized, the meticulous retrieval and transfer process showcased flawless coordination and dedication.
Additionally, his corneas were recovered, offering the gift of sight to two corneal blind patients, illuminating their worlds with renewed hope.Through this act, the donor family saved three lives and gifted sight to two more, turning grief into a lasting legacy of hope and renewal.
Earlier on August 21, 2025, a man in his mid-thirties from Hisar, Haryana, also a victim of a devastating road traffic accident, was declared brain stem dead. His family, overwhelmed with grief, showed remarkable courage and compassion by consenting to organ donation. Their noble decision resulted in the successful transplantation of both kidneys at PGIMER, offering renewed hope and a new lease on life to two patients suffering from end-stage renal failure. This act of selflessness exemplifies the profound impact of organ donation, transforming tragedy into a legacy of compassion and life.
Prior, it was on August 8, 2025, a young woman in her twenties from Patiala, declared brain stem dead after a tragic road accident, became a shining beacon of hope here at PGIMER. With her family’s heartfelt consent, her organs were donated to save lives. Her kidneys, pancreas, and liver were transplanted at PGIMER, while her lungs were airlifted via a Green Corridor to a hospital in Chennai. This noble act of organ donation resulted in saving four lives. At PGIMER, three recipients received life-changing transplants: one received a liver, another received a kidney and pancreas simultaneously, and a third received a single kidney. The fourth recipient, in Chennai, received a new lease on life through a successful lung transplant. Her family’s compassion turned tragedy into hope, making a profound difference in the lives of many.
A grieving family member, with tearful eyes, expressed, “Our loss is immeasurable, but knowing that a part of our loved one lives on in others brings us comfort. We hope more families will find the strength to say yes to organ donation.” The families of the recipients wholeheartedly echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the profound impact of this act of kindness.
Through these three donations, 9 lives were saved and 2 sights restored. Kidneys, liver, pancreas, lungs, and heart were retrieved and transplanted at PGIMER as well as shared with other leading hospitals in the country. Each Green Corridor was made possible by seamless teamwork involving PGIMER’s medical staff, transplant teams, and traffic authorities, ensuring that the precious gift of time was honored.
