SHIMLA-30 June, 2025-The Department of Economics and Statistics celebrated the 19th Statistics Day on Monday at Shimla. The event marked the 132nd birth anniversary of Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis, the pioneering architect of India's modern statistical system and a visionary in the field of large-scale sample surveys.
Celebrated nationwide, this year's observance was dedicated to the theme, "75 Years of National Sample Survey (NSS)." acknowledging NSS's immense contribution to the country's data infrastructure since its inception in 1950.
Secretary Finance, Economics and Statistics Dr. Abhishek Jain who was the Chief Guest on the occasion emphasized the need to strengthen data systems for enabling transparency, responsive administration and informed decision-making. He underscored the importance of state and district level statistical capacities in achieving inclusive development outcomes.
"Data-driven decisions are the foundation of sustainable development. Let us continue to embrace data-driven approaches to enhance the welfare of our people", he said adding that together we can transform numbers into progress and prosperity.
Ajay Sood, Associate Professor, Department of Economics, Himachal Pradesh University, officers from the Economics and Statistics Department and students from various colleges of Shimla were present on the occasion.
A special presentation by the Department provided an overview of the 75-year journey of the National Sample Survey, spotlighting its role in generating reliable statistics in areas such as employment, health, education, consumption and rural development.
Dr. Vinod Rana, Economic Adviser, addressed the gathering and reiterated the vital role that statistical systems play in policy design, monitoring and evaluation.
As a part of the celebrations, a State-Level Quiz Competition was organized to foster enthusiasm for statistics among youth. Students from colleges across Himachal Pradesh enthusiastically took part and were also awarded on the occasion besides given participation certificates
