Chandigarh, June 30, 2025: The Department of Home Science at Mehr Chand Mahajan DAV College for Women, in collaboration with the NSS units and under the aegis of Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, inaugurated a 7-day hands-on workshop titled ‘Kala aur Atmanirbharta’. The workshop focuses on skill development and entrepreneurship in the domain of Home Science, aiming to empower participants through practical training and promote self-reliance through vocational education.

The workshop was inaugurated by the Officiating Principal Ms Neena Sharma, who underscored the growing relevance of skill-based education in today’s dynamic socio-economic landscape. In her keynote address, she highlighted the expansive scope of Home Science in nurturing self-sufficiency, sustainable lifestyles, and entrepreneurial ventures, especially for women.

The inaugural day featured an orientation session followed by a live demonstration of tie-and-dye techniques on items such as scarves and dupattas. These demonstrations combined traditional methods with contemporary design sensibilities, reflecting the evolving nature of the discipline. A total of 38 participants, ranging in age from 18 to 52 years and representing diverse backgrounds, are attending the workshop. Their enthusiastic participation affirms the increasing interest in Home Science as a viable career and life skill domain. Over the course of the next six days, the workshop will offer intensive hands-on training in two major areas: fabric ornamentation and culinary skills. These sessions are designed to build both creative proficiency and entrepreneurial acumen among participants.
