MAHENDERGARH, 20.02.26-Researchers at the Central University of Haryana (CUH), Mahendergarh, NIPER Hajipur, IIT BHU Banaras, IISER Berhampur, and DIPSRU New Delhi, developed herbal formulation to reverse diabetes-induced kidney damage.

The research, led by Dr. Vipan Parihar, Professor and Head of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at CUH, in collaboration with Dr. V. Ravichandran, Vice chancellor, Delhi Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research University, and Dr. Ruthrotha Selvi, Associate Professot, IISER IISER Berhampur has identified specific genes and proteins responsible for kidney protection. This study is funded by Ministry of chemicals and fertilizer, Govt of India (to NIPER Hajipur).

Prof. Tankeshwar Kumar, Vice Chancellor of Central University of Haryana, has provided strategic and technical guidance throughout this research, highlighted the importance of Bridging Ayurveda with evidence-based scientific approaches in medicine. This breakthrough exemplifies CUH's commitment to translational research that addresses pressing health challenges like diabetic nephropathy,” he stated. “The university is proud of this achievement and is fully committed to nurturing this innovation into a successful startup, providing all necessary technical and administrative support to bridge this traditional remedy with modern therapeutic practice.”

Ash gourd, often called 'White Petha' or Winter Melon, prevents diabetes-related kidney damage. The scientists found that diabetes damages the kideney genes that regulate electrolyte balance, water homeostasis, and waste excretion. While the White Petha formation made from fruit pulp boosts genes and proteins necessary for kidney function and blood purification, reducing diabetic kidney damage. The investigation has unveiled scientific evidence supporting the medicinal and dietary benefits of Petha, highlighting its therapeutic potential and paving the way for innovative therapies and a new start-up. The findings have been published in J Ethnopharmacology, a leading international journal.
