Chandigarh, October 30, 2026:Chandigarh is set to witness a new chapter in the celebration of Chhath Mahaparv this year. For the first time, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh will make extensive special arrangements for Chhath Puja at approximately 14–15 different locations across the city. Taking forward this initiative of Mayor Saurabh Joshi, the Finance and Contract Committee (F&CC) has approved a budget allocation of ₹50 lakh.
Significantly, a supplementary agenda proposing an expenditure of ₹35.27 lakh was initially prepared by the Municipal Corporation on the specific directions of Mayor Saurabh Joshi. However, considering the growing number of devotees, the need for Chhath Ghats in different areas and the importance of providing better facilities, Mayor Joshi personally moved a proposal during the F&CC meeting chaired by him to enhance the proposed budget to ₹50 lakh.
The other members of the Committee accepted and supported the Mayor’s proposal, and the enhanced allocation was duly approved through a formal resolution. Accordingly, an additional ₹14.73 lakh was sanctioned over and above the originally proposed amount for Chhath Mahaparv preparations.
“The Faith of Chhathi Maiya’s Devotees Is Paramount; No Compromise on Facilities” — Mayor Saurabh Joshi
Speaking on the occasion, Mayor Saurabh Joshi said:
“Chhath Mahaparv is not merely a festival; it symbolises the unwavering faith, rich cultural heritage and deep-rooted emotions of millions of families belonging to Purvanchal and Mithilanchal. Every family residing in Chandigarh is an integral part of our city.
Our endeavour is to ensure that no devotee of Chhathi Maiya faces unnecessary inconvenience while performing the sacred rituals. Our priority is to provide clean, safe and well-equipped Chhath Ghats close to devotees’ homes wherever feasible.
It was with this commitment that I proposed enhancing the budget from ₹35.27 lakh to ₹50 lakh, which was duly accepted by the other F&CC members. I sincerely thank all Committee members for their valuable support and cooperation.”
Extensive Preparations at 14–15 Locations; Special Facilities for Devotees
For Chhath Mahaparv, scheduled for November 15 and 16, 2026, the Municipal Corporation will make special arrangements at identified locations, including the pond in the Green Belt at Indira Colony, Manimajra; Shivalik Garden; Sunder Nagar in Mauli Jagran; and other proposed sites across Chandigarh.
The arrangements will include the construction of temporary Chhath Ghats wherever required, water-filling facilities, cleanliness and sanitation, park repairs, painting, electrical and decorative lighting, tents, sound systems and other essential civic amenities.
In addition, cultural programmes and performances by artists are proposed to promote and celebrate the rich folk traditions and cultural heritage of Purvanchal.
