Chandigarh, September 29: Taking up the concerns of Chandigarh medical aspirants and their parents, Mayor Sh. Saurabh Joshi has written to Hon’ble Governor of Punjab and Administrator, U.T. Chandigarh, Sh. Gulab Chand Kataria, seeking an early decision on the restoration of the UT Chandigarh Pool for postgraduate MD/MS admissions at Government Medical College & Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32.
The Mayor has urged the Chandigarh Administration to finalise the eligibility framework well before the commencement of the forthcoming PG admission cycle so that students are not left facing uncertainty at a crucial stage of their academic careers.
Mayor Saurabh Joshi pointed out that a number of students belonging to Chandigarh pursue their MBBS degrees from medical colleges outside the city through the All India admission process. He has requested that eligible Chandigarh students be given an opportunity to compete for PG seats at GMCH-32 on the basis of NEET-PG merit, subject to the eligibility conditions approved by the competent authority and applicable directions of the Hon’ble Court.
The Mayor has also referred to the 10-year schooling criterion recommended by the GMCH expert committee and requested the competent authorities to examine the recommendation while finalising the eligibility framework for the UT Chandigarh Pool.
Emphasising the need for a timely decision, Mayor Joshi said that eligibility conditions should be made clear sufficiently in advance so that students and their families are able to plan their academic choices accordingly.
“Chandigarh’s medical students should not be left uncertain until the admission process begins. There must be a clear, fair and legally sustainable framework that gives eligible Chandigarh students an opportunity while keeping NEET-PG merit at the centre of admissions,” Mayor Saurabh Joshi said.
He further stressed that the issue concerns the academic future of Chandigarh students and therefore deserves to be examined on priority.
The Mayor has requested the Chandigarh Administration and concerned authorities, including the Chief Secretary and Home Secretary, to take up the matter expeditiously and initiate appropriate action in accordance with law and applicable judicial directions before the forthcoming PG admission cycle.

MC Chandigarh Organises ‘Sports for Swachhata’ to Spread the Message of Cleanliness
Chandigarh, September 29:-The MC Chandigarh organised a ‘Sports for Swachhata’ programme at the Sports Complex, Sector 7, Chandigarh, on Tuesday as part of the ongoing Swachhata Hi Seva 2026 campaign.
The programme was flagged off by Sh. Saurabh Joshi, Mayor, Chandigarh, in the presence of Sh. Balbir Raj Singh, Joint Commissioner-III, Dr. Inderdeep Kaur, Medical Officer of Health (MOH) and other concerned officials.
The programme was organised with the message “खेलो, जुड़ो, स्वच्छता का संदेश दो”, connecting the spirit of sports with the importance of cleanliness and responsible civic behaviour.
Speaking on the occasion, the Mayor said that sports teach important values such as teamwork, discipline, participation and responsibility, which are equally important for keeping the city clean. He encouraged citizens, especially young people, to actively participate in cleanliness activities and contribute towards making Chandigarh a cleaner and healthier city.
The programme also aimed to create awareness among participants about keeping public places clean, avoiding littering and adopting responsible civic habits in their daily lives.
The Municipal Corporation Chandigarh continues to organise various activities under Swachhata Hi Seva 2026 to strengthen Jan Bhagidari and encourage citizens to make cleanliness a shared responsibility.
The event concluded with an appeal to citizens to actively participate in cleanliness initiatives and work together for a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable Chandigarh.

93 Families Await Justice: Mayor Saurabh Joshi Seeks Priority Approval for Compassionate Appointments of Safai Mitras
20–22 Years of Service, Still Awaiting Regularisation: Mayor Takes Up Safai Mitras’ Long-Pending Rights and Welfare Issues
Chandigarh, September 29: Standing firmly with Chandigarh’s Safai Mitras, Mayor Sh. Saurabh Joshi today took up their long-pending service and welfare concerns after nearly 150 sanitation workers met him at the Municipal Corporation office.
The delegation placed several issues before the Mayor, with the compassionate appointment of 93 eligible family members of Safai Mitras emerging as the most pressing concern.
Taking immediate cognisance, Mayor Saurabh Joshi wrote to the Chandigarh Administration seeking priority approval of the 93 compassionate appointments, stressing that the affected families should not be made to wait any longer for relief.
Another major issue raised was the regularisation of sanitation workers who have been serving for nearly 20–22 years. The matter has already been placed before the Municipal Corporation House, and the Mayor assured the workers that it would be pursued at the appropriate level.
The delegation also sought Basic Pay and DA-related benefits for sanitation workers associated with five and thirteen villages, NPS and GPF benefits for eligible employees, allotment of vacant government accommodation, and Diwali bonus for regular, daily-wage/death-case and outsourced sanitation workers.
Mayor Joshi said Safai Mitras form the backbone of Chandigarh’s cleanliness and public-health system and their genuine concerns deserve timely consideration.
“Those who have dedicated decades to keeping Chandigarh clean deserve dignity, security and justice. The 93 affected families should get timely relief, and the genuine service and welfare issues of our Safai Mitras will be pursued with the concerned authorities on priority,” Mayor Saurabh Joshi said.
He assured the delegation that all legitimate demands would be taken up for an early and lawful resolution in accordance with the applicable rules and procedures.

Chandigarh, September 29: Chandigarh is set to take a significant step towards emerging as a Model City for urban cleanliness and sustainable waste management under the PRAGATI-50 initiative, launched today by Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs, Sh. Manohar Lal, in New Delhi.
The initiative envisages focused development of 50 Model Cities across the country, with emphasis on achieving higher benchmarks in urban cleanliness, scientific solid waste management, used-water management, sanitation, technology-enabled monitoring and citizen participation.
Mayor of Chandigarh, Sh. Saurabh Joshi, along with senior officers of the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh, participated virtually in the national-level interaction.
During the interaction, Mayor Joshi was given the opportunity to place Chandigarh’s priorities, initiatives and best practices before the national forum.
Presenting Chandigarh’s urban transformation journey, the Mayor prominently highlighted the transformation of the legacy waste site at Dadumajra, where sustained scientific remediation and environmental restoration efforts are changing a long-standing waste-management challenge into a greener and aesthetically improved landscape.
Mayor Joshi also apprised the Union Minister and participating dignitaries of Chandigarh’s continued focus on scientific waste processing, cleanliness, technology-based monitoring, environmental sustainability and greater citizen participation.
Expressing gratitude to the Union Minister, Mayor Saurabh Joshi said:

Manohar Lal ji for giving me, as Mayor of Chandigarh, the opportunity to present our city’s important issues, priorities and initiatives before the national forum. He further said that Chandigarh would take the PRAGATI-50 initiative as an opportunity to further raise the city’s urban-governance and sanitation benchmarks.

Chandigarh will strengthen scientific waste management, technology-driven monitoring and public participation to move towards a cleaner, greener and future-ready city,” Mayor Joshi said.
The Mayor stated that the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh would work in a KPI-driven and outcome-oriented manner, with regular monitoring and measurable targets, to achieve the objectives envisaged under PRAGATI-50.
He added that Chandigarh’s approach would remain centred on cleanliness, sustainability, innovation and improved quality of life for every citizen.

MCC Intensifies Enforcement Against Littering; Issues 7 Challans
Chandigarh, September 29: The Municipal Corporation Chandigarh has intensified its enforcement drive against littering and improper disposal of waste at public places across the city. As part of the ongoing drive, the MCC issued 07 challans during September 28 and 29, imposing a total penalty of Rs.98,497/-.
As per the field report, a penalty of Rs. 14,071/- per violator was imposed for violations related to littering and improper disposal of waste. The violations were reported from Sector 17, 22, 26, 36 and Burail, Chandigarh.
The enforcement teams continued inspections at various locations to ensure compliance with the prescribed waste-management norms and to discourage littering in public spaces.
The Municipal Corporation Chandigarh has appealed to residents, shopkeepers, market associations and commercial establishments to maintain cleanliness and dispose of waste responsibly. Citizens have also been urged to segregate waste at source and use designated waste-collection and disposal facilities.
The MCC reiterated that enforcement action against littering and improper waste disposal will continue across Chandigarh. Citizens are requested to cooperate with the civic authorities and contribute towards maintaining the city’s cleanliness and environmental standards.
