Ludhiana 29 January 2020-Dr. Anuj Tyagi, Assistant Professor (Fish Microbiology) from College of Fisheries, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU) bagged the “Best Young Scientist Award” for significant scientific contributions in the field of ‘Genomics in Aquaculture'. He awarded during 3rdInternational Symposium on Genomics in Aquaculture (ISGA III) jointly organized by ICAR-Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture (CIFA) and Association of Aqua-Culturists, Bhubaneswar (Odisha). The three days symposium was attended by national and international experts from genomics, metagenomics, bioinformatics and intellectual property right areas. During the conference, progress and current genome sequencing status of important fishes such as rohu (Labeo rohita), Indian magur (Clarias batrachus) and brackish water shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) was discussed in details. Experts also deliberated on genomics, metagenomics and antimicrobial resistance status of important aquatic microbial communities and pathogens.
Dr. Anuj Tyagi presented his work on “Isolation, characterization and complete genome sequencing of pathogenic bacteria, Aeromonas veronii from Indian major carp, Labeo rohita”, including the first complete genome assembly, virulence factors and metabolic pathways of the pathogen isolated from fish in India. Dr. Anuj’s work on phage genome sequencing and metagenomics research, in context to aquatic environment, was also appreciated by the national/international fraternity and ICAR’s Deputy Director General (Fisheries), Dr. J.K. Jena, who presented him with the award and cash prize of Rs. 5000/-. The work presented by Tyagi is a team work carried out at College of Fisheries, GADVASU with active contributions of Dr. Abhishek Srivastava, Dr. Devendra Pathak, Ms. Chetna Sharma and Mr. Sumeet Rai. Dr. Vaneet Inder Kaur, Head, Department of Aquatic Environment and Dr. Kulbir Singh Sandhu, Dean, College of Fisheries, Dr. J.P.S. Gill, Director Research congratulated Dr. Tyagi for his outstanding achievement in the field of genomics, which is expected to play a significant role in aquatic animal health management and conservation of aquatic resources.
