Chandigarh, January 17; ‘Inspired by Greta Thunberg, the teenager on a global mission to ‘make a difference’, hundreds of tricity School students will join for ‘Climategiri’ at Sector 17 Plaza, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., on coming Monday, January 20, 2020’, said Louis Lopez, Principal of St. Stephen’s School, Chandigarh. He added that this initiative is being organized in active partnership with Department of Environment, Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee, Municipal Corporation, Earth Day Network India, Yuvsatta-an NGO, Chandigarh Commission for Protection of Child Rights, Pratyak and Independent Schools Association-ISA.

Sharing his concerns Debendra Dalai, Director, Department of Environment said that young Greta Thunberg is really an inspiration and become a role model for young people around the world. This Swedish environment activist’s campaign began with solo climate protest and drew 4 million to latest strikes. He also said that Climate change poses a major threat to sustainable development all across the globe. So such initiatives are need of the day to infuse enthusiasm and create awareness among the future torchbearers of the world, especially the young people.

Seema Gupta, Eco Club incharge of the St. Stephen’s School informed about a ‘Climate Circus’ being organized on the occasion by a group of 50 marginalized kids from Delhi.

Pramod Sharma, Coordinator of Yuvsatta-NGO said that they expect students from over 140 tricity Schools to participate in the initiative. Climategiri is an offshoot of Gandhigiri, another campaign to resolve issues such as violence against man and nature. And on the occasion various students groups will join and will perform on stage various group songs, solo-acts, street-plays, fashion show, green-quiz etc. dedicated to the cause of climate change. Many Schools will put up their stalls displaying various herbal plants, eco-friendly products, systems to show proper garbage disposal and waste compositing. They have also planned to use social media in a big way by having special prizes for best Facebook, Instagram and YouTube posts.

The programme is expected to end with blessings and guidance for young people by Mr. VP Singh Badnore Governor Punjab & Administrator, Chandigarh Administration.
