Chandigarh, 23April 2026:In a significant push to strengthen road connectivity infrastructure, the proposal for construction of a High-Level Bridge over Sukhna Choe connecting Manimajra and Sector-26 has been approved. This decision was taken in a meeting chaired by Sh. H. Rajesh Prasad, IAS, Chief Secretary, UT Chandigarh. A detailed presentation on the project was made by the Engineering Department.

At present, commuters face significant challenges at the existing vented causeway, which serves as a crucial link for daily traffic movement between Chandigarh and Panchkula. The causeway, having a limited width, leads to severe congestion during peak hours. In addition, the stretch frequently becomes non-operational during the monsoon season due to overflow of Sukhna Choe, resulting in disruption of traffic, safety concerns and inconvenience to the public. The route is heavily relied upon for connectivity to important city landmarks including Sukhna Lake, Sector-17, PGI, Punjab University and the High Court.

The proposed High-Level Bridge is expected to provide uninterrupted all-weather connectivity, eliminating the existing bottleneck and ensuring smooth traffic flow. The project will significantly reduce travel time, enhance commuter safety, and strengthen the overall efficiency of Chandigarh’s urban road network, while catering to increasing traffic demand.

The project, estimated at a cost of ₹16.63 crore, envisages construction of a high-level bridge with dual four-lane carriageways, along with dedicated footpaths and cycle tracks. The design incorporates advanced RCC and precast construction technology, along with efficient drainage systems and flood-resilient measures to ensure durability, sustainability, and reliable performance under all weather conditions.

The project is likely to be taken up for execution in July 2026, with an estimated completion period of 12 months from the commencement of work.
