MC Chandigarh launches intensive awareness drive on four-type source segregation in sectors 41 & 42

Chandigarh, December 10:- In an effort to significantly improve the city’s waste management performance, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh has launched a focused awareness campaign on four-type source segregation in Sectors 41 and 42. The initiative comes in response to Chandigarh’s low score in source segregation during the recent Swachh Survekshan, underscoring the urgent need for active citizen participation to achieve better cleanliness outcomes.

While speaking about the campaign, MC Commissioner Sh. Amit Kumar, IAS said that under this campaign, residents are being sensitized about the importance of segregating waste into four distinct categories—wet waste, dry waste, domestic hazardous waste, and sanitary waste—directly at the household level. Pamphlets containing detailed guidelines, segregation tips, and dos and don’ts are being distributed door-to-door to ensure that every resident understands their role in maintaining a clean city.

He said that a major highlight of the initiative is the active involvement of Self Help Group (SHG) women, who are working closely with the sanitation team to educate households through personal interaction, demonstrations, and awareness talks. These trained Swachhata women ambassadors are helping bridge the communication gap and encouraging families to adopt responsible waste practices.

In future, all sectors will be taken up for this kind of Awareness drive and Whole chandigarh will be covered.

He stressed that achieving meaningful improvement in cleanliness rankings is impossible without people’s cooperation. Source segregation is the foundation of efficient waste processing, recycling, and cleaner neighbourhoods, and collective participation is essential for success.

He appealed to all residents of Sectors 41 and 42—and the city at large—to support this mission and make source segregation a daily habit, helping Chandigarh move towards a cleaner and more sustainable future.

MC Chandigarh issues challan to horticulture wing JE for negligence in lifting pruning waste

Chandigarh, December 10:- In a firm move to uphold the city’s cleanliness standards, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh has issued a challan to the Junior Engineer of the Horticulture Wing, Chandigarh Administration, for failing to lift horticulture pruning waste in a timely manner.

Earlier, the Municipal Corporation had served a notice to the concerned JE for not clearing the accumulated pruning waste along Dakshin Marg near the Sector 21 petrol pump. The notice had clearly stated that if the waste was not removed within the stipulated time, strict action including issuance of a challan would follow. As the waste remained uncleared beyond the notice period, the challan has now been imposed.

The MC Chandigarh reiterated that delay in lifting horticulture waste leads to inconvenience for commuters, contributes to littering, and negatively affects the city’s environmental hygiene. Ensuring timely disposal is the responsibility of the concerned field staff, and any lapse will continue to attract strict action.

Municipal Commissioner Sh. Amit Kumar, IAS appealed to all departments, agencies, and residents to join hands with the Municipal Corporation in maintaining cleanliness across Chandigarh. He emphasised that keeping the city clean is a collective responsibility and urged all to refrain from littering in public spaces.

The MC Chandigarh affirmed its commitment to enforcing sanitation norms strictly and ensuring that every stakeholder fulfills their role in preserving the city’s status as one of the cleanest urban spaces in the country.

MC Chandigarh moves toward unified single parking pass system; Banks participate in pre-consultation meet

Chandigarh, December 10:- The Municipal Corporation Chandigarh has taken a significant step toward easing parking access for residents by initiating the implementation process of a Single Parking Pass System for all paid parking sites under its jurisdiction. A high-level meeting chaired by Sh. Amit Kumar, IAS, Commissioner, MC Chandigarh, was held today to discuss the Phase-I rollout and integration framework of the new system.

Under the proposed structure, monthly passes will be issued at ₹500 for four-wheelers and ₹250 for two-wheelers, offering citywide access to all MCC-managed paid parking locations. The initiative aims to introduce a secure, tamper-proof, and technologically robust mechanism ensuring efficient revenue management, enhanced user convenience, better monitoring, and seamless pass validation.

Officials from MCC, the Department of Information Technology (DIT), Chandigarh, and representatives from various banks attended the presentation-cum-pre-consultation meeting. Key discussions included the use of RFID tags and QR-based digital passes, bank-integrated digital payments (UPI, cards, net banking), real-time revenue dashboards, mobile app-based access, and a centralized backend control system to ensure transparency, data security, and operational reliability.

Banks were briefed on the proposed technical architecture, payment integration requirements, and compliance guidelines under DPDP and CERT-In norms. The W/Commissioner directed that a committee be constituted to scrutinize technical and financial proposals and finalize the banking partner for system implementation.

The Single Parking Pass System is expected to streamline parking operations, improve service delivery, and provide residents with a unified, hassle-free parking experience across Chandigarh.
