MC Chandigarh conducts major anti-encroachment drive in Sector 22; violators challaned & warned of strict action
Chandigarh, November 22:- The Municipal Corporation Chandigarh today carried out an intensive anti-encroachment drive across key locations of Sector 22, including Shastri Market, Kiran Cinema area, the vendor zone, and surrounding stretches. Encroachments near the Sector 22 Dispensary were also effectively removed as part of the coordinated action.
The drive was conducted under the direct supervision of MC Joint Commissioner, Sh. Himanshu Gupta, who was accompanied by the MCC Enforcement Inspectors and field staff. The team undertook a thorough inspection of the market areas, footpaths, and vending zones, removing unauthorized structures and items obstructing public movement.
During the drive, 35 challans were issued to violators found flouting civic norms and occupying public spaces illegally. Goods displayed beyond permissible limits, illegal extensions, and unauthorized setups were cleared to ensure smooth pedestrian movement and restore public convenience.
The Joint Commissioner emphasized that such drives will continue regularly to maintain discipline and uphold the city’s cleanliness and accessibility standards. He reiterated MCC’s commitment to reclaiming public spaces from illegal occupation and ensuring that market areas remain organized and citizen-friendly.
A strict warning has been issued to all violators, stating that repeat offenses will attract severe legal action, including higher penalties and possible seizure of goods. MCC also urged shopkeepers, vendors, and market associations to cooperate in maintaining an encroachment-free environment.

MC Chandigarh to organize educational exposure visits for students to MRF centres and SWM Plant under SBM
Chandigarh, November 22:- The Municipal Corporation Chandigarh has set to launch a series of educational exposure visits for school and college students to promote awareness on solid waste management, source segregation, and the principles of Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) 2.0.
The initiative comes as part of Chandigarh’s active participation in Swachh Survekshan 2025, conducted annually by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. With an aim to nurture responsible behaviour and strengthen the culture of cleanliness among younger generations, MCC is involving students and youth groups across the city in various awareness activities.
While sharing this initiative, MC Commissioner Sh. Amit Kumar, IAS said here today that under this programme, students will be taken to the Pink MRF Centre in Sector 25 and the Solid Waste Management Plant of the Municipal Corporation. During the visit, they will gain firsthand understanding of Source segregation of waste, Processing and disposal mechanisms, Scientific waste management systems and Implementation of Single Use Plastic (SUP) ban.
He said that the interactive exposure will help students observe real-time operations and understand how responsible waste management contributes to a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable Chandigarh.
He said that developing a sense of responsibility towards cleanliness at a young age is essential for long-term behavioural change, and such initiatives will play a key role in improving citizen participation in Swachh Survekshan 2025.
He encouraged schools and colleges to actively participate in this initiative and help build environmentally conscious future citizens.
