Chandigarh, April 13, 2026: Governor of Haryana Prof Ashim Kumar Ghosh on Monday extended warm greetings on the auspicious occasion of Poila Baisakh, the Bengali New Year, while addressing a gathering at Kalibari, Chandigarh, during the annual celebrations of Pran Pratishtha of Thakur Ramakrishna. Lady Governor Smt Mitra Ghosh was also present on the occasion.

Describing the occasion as one of great joy and renewal, Governor Prof Ghosh noted that Poila Baisakh, derived from Poila meaning first and Baisakh, the first month of the Bengali calendar, marks the beginning of a new year filled with hope, prosperity and fresh beginnings.

Prof Ghosh emphasized the deep cultural and unifying significance of festivals in India, stating that celebrations such as Diwali, Eid al-Fitr, Christmas, Gurpurab, Pongal and Poila Baisakh transcend religious boundaries and bring people together in shared joy. “These occasions foster mutual respect, promote cultural exchange and reinforce the values of harmony, compassion and coexistence,” he said, adding that they embody the spirit of unity in diversity.

Highlighting unique traditions associated with Poila Baisakh, the Governor referred to the Halkhata ceremony, where businesses open new account books and seek blessings for prosperity, as well as the festive enthusiasm generated by Choitro sales.

Commending Kalibari Chandigarh, he appreciated its dedicated efforts in preserving and promoting cultural traditions, particularly for younger generations living away from their roots. “Institutions like Kalibari play a vital role in sustaining our cultural identity and heritage,” he remarked.

Governor Prof Ashim Kumar Ghosh and Lady Governor Smt Mitra Ghosh also released Apabrinu, annual magazine of Kalibari and felicitated its editorial team.
