Chandigarh, 2 January: NSS Units, Equal Opportunity Cell and Internal Committee for Persons with Disabilities at Mehr Chand Mahajan DAV College for Women, in collaboration with GRIID, Chandigarh, observed International Day of Persons with Disabilities through a three-day outreach programme. The initiative aimed to sensitise students to the needs, abilities and rights of persons with disabilities while fostering empathy, awareness and inclusive community engagement.
The programme commenced with a hands-on training session at GRIID, wherein 20 student volunteers gained practical exposure to disability assessment and rehabilitation services. Dr Reena Jain acquainted the volunteers with GRIID’s mission, certification procedures and person-centric approach to care, highlighting the importance of customised interventions for diverse conditions, including autism. Students also observed assessment techniques in the Speech Therapy Department and learned effective, supportive communication strategies essential for working with persons with disabilities. On the second day, NSS volunteers actively participated in the Athletic Meet held at the GRIID Sports Complex. The volunteers also assisted in event management and result documentation, ensuring the smooth conduct of the meet. The three-day programme culminated with a vibrant Carnival organised at Sector 31-C, Chandigarh.
Officiating Principal Ms. Neena Sharma lauded the students for their dedicated involvement in promoting inclusivity and social sensitivity. She emphasised that such experiential learning opportunities play a crucial role in shaping socially responsible citizens. The programme stood as a testament to the college’s commitment to inclusive education, social outreach and the celebration of shared joy beyond barriers.
