Mohali-16, November 2023: Max Super Specialty Hospital, Mohali, one of the leading super specialty hospital in the region, successfully enabled the region’s first-ever successful pregnancy post-robotic uterine fibroid removal and uterus reconstruction surgery. This is the first ever successful pregnancy post-robotic myomectomy (uterine fibroid removal) and robotic uterus reconstruction surgery in this region, which includes Punjab, Haryana, and North of NCR. The surgery was led by Dr. Seema Wadhwa, Director of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Robotic Surgery, Max Hospital, Mohali with the help of one of the Da Vinci Robot, a new-age robotic-assisted surgery system.

The 40-year-old approached the doctor with complaints of pain in her abdominal region with a history of primary infertility and upon further investigation, multiple uterine fibroids of varying sizes and distorted endometrial lining were observed. This, in turn, hindered her ability to conceive and have a healthy pregnancy. Based on this diagnosis, Dr. Wadhwa recommended a robotic myomectomy, a surgical procedure that utilizes a robotic-assisted system, to remove approximately 13 to 15 fibroids with sizes ranging between 8 cm and 10 cm. The procedure was not limited to fibroid removal; it also included the meticulous reconstruction of the uterus, which had been significantly distorted by the presence of these fibroids.

Highlighting the success of this case, Dr. Seema Wadhwa, Director of Obstetrics, Gynaecology, and Robotic Surgery, Max Hospital, Mohali, said, “Throughout this process, we faced numerous difficulties. However, with the dexterity, precision, and 3D vision provided by the robotic-assisted technology, we were able to remove the fibroids and reconstruct the uterus more meticulously. The precision of this procedure led her to conceive soon after the surgery. With new-age RAS technologies like the da Vinci, we just need to do keyhole surgery to remove fibroids with more precision and less blood loss and difficulties. In this case, the patient's recovery was exceptional, and she was discharged merely one day after the surgery. Its success proves that women with fibroids can also look forward to conceiving and having a healthy pregnancy. This is a testament to the possibilities and choices available to women, even if there are certain health difficulties.”

Early detection and intervention is the key to maintaining reproductive health. The size and location of fibroids are crucial in determining the appropriate treatment. In cases where large fibroids are located near the uterine lining and obstruct the birth canal, surgical intervention may be required.
