CHANDIGARH, 24.12.25-On the eve of National Consumer Day–2025, a seminar was organized by the Department of Food & Supplies and Consumer Affairs & Legal Metrology, U.T., Chandigarh, in coordination with the Consumer Association Chandigarh. The theme for National Consumer Day–2025 was “Efficient and Speedy Redressal through Digital Justice.”
This was followed by a lecture delivered by Sh. Ajay Jagga, Advocate, highlighting the theme of National Consumer Day.The role of the National Consumer Helpline (NCH) was appreciated for its significant contribution in assisting consumers. The NCH is now available in 17 languages, providing a consumer-friendly interface. Nearly 12 lakh complaints per year are being received through the helpline, and refunds amounting to ₹27.61 crore have been successfully settled. The average time for resolution of complaints is approximately three weeks.
The Government’s digital initiatives, such as e-Jagriti, were also appreciated for spreading awareness about consumer rights, remedies, and redressal mechanisms against unfair trade practices, defective goods, deficient services, and misleading advertisements. The e-filing facility under the Consumer Protection Act enables consumers to file complaints online from anywhere, thereby eliminating geographical and procedural barriers. Virtual hearings have significantly reduced time, travel, and litigation costs, with 3.81 crore virtual hearings conducted so far.
On the occasion, a Right to Service (RTS) Booklet penned by Sh. Ajay Jagga Advocate was also launched, providing insights into nearly 800 services being delivered by various departments under the RTS Act. Thereafter, a lecture was delivered by Advocate I.P. Singh on “How to File a Consumer Complaint Online.”
Further, Sh. Rajesh K. Arya, Member, State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, U.T., Chandigarh, who was also the Chief Guest, delivered a lecture on the new features of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019. Various achievements of the State Commission, Chandigarh, were also highlighted during the programme.
The seminar was attended by school children, advocates, and members of the general public.
Another Nukkad Natak is planned at Dhanas to further spread consumer awareness on National Consumer Rights Day–2025.
