CHANDIGARH 7th September -A delegation of the Chandigarh Traders Association (Regd.), Sector 17, led by President Shri Kamaljit Singh Panchhi, along with Shri Mandeep Singh, Shri Naresh Bansal and Shri Vikas Batta, met Shri Rajeev Mehta, Chief Architect, Chandigarh, and submitted a representation highlighting an important public-amenity issue affecting shopkeepers, visitors, tourists and the general public in Sector 17. The delegation specifically requested the sanctioning of a suitable space for construction of a public toilet facility opposite Hyatt Centric, Sector 17, particularly in the vicinity of the pedestrian underpass connecting the Rose Garden with Sector 17.
The delegation pointed out that the pedestrian underpass witnesses substantial footfall throughout the day, with a large number of senior citizens, women, children, tourists and visitors regularly using this important passage. The adjoining open area also frequently hosts small events, cultural programmes and public gatherings, leading to increased footfall and further underscoring the need for adequate public amenities in the area. The Association highlighted that there is presently no adequate public toilet facility in the immediate vicinity of the underpass and adjoining open area, causing considerable inconvenience, particularly to senior citizens, women, children, tourists and other visitors. At times, people are compelled to approach nearby shopkeepers for assistance, which is neither convenient nor a sustainable solution.
Kamaljit Singh Panchhi, urged the authorities to consider this genuine public requirement on priority, stating that the provision of a clean, accessible and properly maintained public toilet would significantly improve convenience and civic amenities for the large number of people visiting and passing through the area. After detailed discussions, The Chief Architect, assured the delegation that the matter would be examined and appropriate action would be taken at the earliest, keeping in view the larger public interest.
