Chandigarh, July 25, 2025-Taking a major stride in the technological advancement of Panjab University (PU), the PU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Renu Vig today inaugurated a cutting-edge AI Data Centre and Intel Unnati Lab at its University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET), Block-I, Sector 25. The establishment of these facilities marks a pivotal moment for PU, significantly enhancing its capabilities in artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing.

This development was made possible through the generous Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) contribution from Vardhman Textiles Ltd. The inauguration function was also graced by the presence of PU Registrar Prof. YP Verma, Director, Research, Development & Consultancy Cell Prof. Meenakshi Goyal, UIET Director Prof. Sukhwinder Singh, and Ms. Ruchi Sharma from Intel Corporation.

Speaking on the occasion, PU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Renu Vig said

The AI Data Centre is designed to provide students and researchers with the robust resources necessary for groundbreaking work in these rapidly evolving fields.

Key features of the AI Data Centre include:

  • Computational Power: A formidable combination of 26 TFLOPS from an NVIDIA H100 GPU and 9.7 TFLOPS from each of four NVIDIA A100 GPUs, delivering unparalleled processing capabilities.
  • Total CUDA Cores: A combined total of 42,240 CUDA Cores, comprising 14,592 from the H100 and 6,912 from each of the four A100 GPUs, enabling highly parallel processing for complex AI models.
  • Memory Bandwidth: Exceptional memory bandwidth, with the H100's HBM3 memory offering up to 3.35 TB/s and the A100's HBM2e providing up to 2 TB/s, ensuring rapid data access and transfer.

Complementing the AI Data Centre, the Intel Unnati Lab, set up by the Design Innovation Centre in collaboration with Intel Corporation, will offer direct access to cutting-edge platforms such as Intel DevCloud for the Edge, the Intel OpenVINO™ toolkit, and powerful hardware, including Intel Xeon Scalable Processors. This integration is set to foster hands-on learning, facilitate the acquisition of industry-relevant skills, and promote innovative problem-solving among students and researchers.

The new AI Data Centre and Intel Unnati Lab are set to position Panjab University at the forefront of AI research and education in India, preparing a new generation of professionals to tackle complex challenges and drive technological advancements.
