Chandigarh, September 16: On the occasion of the birthday of Hon’ble Prime Minister Sh. Narendra Modi, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh will organise a special public initiative, ‘Aashirwaad Ka Diya’, under the Sewa Sankalp Abhiyan at Sector-17 Plaza on September 17.

The iconic Sector-17 Plaza will be illuminated with around 50,000 traditional earthen diyas, while members of Self Help Groups (SHGs) will add colour to the celebration by creating vibrant and artistic Rangolis at the venue.

Around 100 local potter families will be associated with the initiative, giving direct support to their traditional livelihood and craftsmanship. The programme has been conceptualised not merely as a celebration, but as an initiative connecting Sewa, livelihood support, women’s participation and ‘Vocal for Local’.

Mayor Sh. Saurabh Joshi said, “Every diya carries the hard work and skill of a local potter family. Through ‘Aashirwaad Ka Diya’, our effort is not only to illuminate Sector-17 Plaza, but also to bring light, dignity and livelihood support into the homes of our local artisans.”

He said the participation of Self Help Groups through Rangoli-making will further strengthen the spirit of community participation and showcase the creativity and contribution of women associated with SHGs.

The Mayor added that locally made earthen diyas represent India’s traditional skills and grassroots economy, and encouraging citizens to purchase and use such products can directly strengthen local artisans.

“50,000 diyas will symbolise 50,000 rays of hope, Sewa and public participation. This celebration will belong to the people of Chandigarh, our potters, our Self Help Groups and every citizen who believes in supporting local livelihoods,” the Mayor said.

The Municipal Corporation has appealed to citizens to participate in the programme, light diyas and support locally made products.
