Chandigarh, June 21 – The 12th International Day of Yoga was celebrated with enthusiasm and gaiety at Haryana Lok Bhavan on Sunday. The programme, organized under the joint aegis of the Haryana Yoga Aayog and the AYUSH Department, was attended by Haryana Governor Prof. Ashim Kumar Ghosh as the Chief Guest. The First Lady of Haryana, Mrs. Mitra Ghosh, also graced the occasion with her presence.
Addressing the event, Haryana Governor Prof. Ashim Kumar Ghosh said that the present Government of India has been working tirelessly for the welfare of not only the people of the country but also for the benefit of humanity at large. He said that the entire world is embracing and learning the values of Yoga, which is an integral part of India’s rich cultural heritage and ancient civilization.
The Governor said that Yoga is not merely a physical exercise but a way of life that promotes mental peace, emotional balance and holistic well-being. Mental peace, he added, leads to the overall development of both the body and the mind.
Prof. Ghosh said that International Yoga Day is now celebrated not only in India but in more than 150 countries across the world. Yoga strengthens the body, calms the mind, enriches thought processes and enhances intellectual abilities, making it a valuable tool for personal and societal development.
He further said that some ideas transcend geographical boundaries and become universal in their appeal. Yoga is one such invaluable spiritual gift of Indian culture that has been shared with the world. The significance of Yoga finds mention in the Rig Veda, the Upanishads and the teachings of Maharshi Patanjali, reflecting its deep roots in India's philosophical and spiritual traditions.
The Governor also recalled the contributions of Swami Vivekananda, who highlighted the importance of India’s spiritual heritage during his historic address at Chicago. His teachings inspired many people in the Western world to learn and adopt the values and practices of Yoga.
Expressing his appreciation for the event, Prof. Ghosh said that he hoped the organisers would continue to hold such programmes every year and further strengthen public awareness about the immense benefits of Yoga.
A group yoga session was organized during the programme, in which participants practiced various yoga asanas, pranayama and meditation techniques under the guidance of trained yoga instructors, reaffirming their commitment to the principles of yoga and holistic well-being.
Among those present on the occasion were Secretary to Governor Sh Vijaykumar Bhavikatti, ADC to Governor Sh Dheeraj Setia, along with officers and staff members of Haryana Lok Bhavan. The programme concluded with all participants taking a pledge to adopt a healthy and disciplined lifestyle.
