Chandigarh, March 19:In a historic and unprecedented initiative, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh today celebrated Vikram Samvat Nav Varsh 2083 for the very first time within the MC Office premises, marking a powerful blend of India’s rich cultural heritage with modern civic governance.
The celebration, conceptualised and initiated under the leadership of Mayor Sh. Saurabh Joshi, reflects a new direction where tradition, administration, and public service come together to inspire citizens.
Extending warm greetings on the auspicious occasion, Mayor Saurabh Joshi conveyed his heartfelt wishes to the residents of Chandigarh and employees of the Municipal Corporation, calling upon everyone to embrace the new year with positivity, responsibility, and renewed civic commitment.
The programme was attended by Joint Commissioner Dr. Himanshu Gupta, senior officers, councillors including Sh. Dalip Sharma, Sh. Harjeet Singh, Sh. Lakhbir Singh, Smt. Mohinder Kaur, former Mayor Sh. Arun Sood, and former Deputy Mayor Sh. Anil Kumar Dubey, along with other dignitaries.
Addressing the gathering, the Mayor emphasised that Chaitra Shukla Pratipada marks not just a new year, but a new beginning rooted in India’s civilisational wisdom. He highlighted that this day symbolises renewal, hope, and a fresh commitment towards duty and service.
Underscoring the historical and cultural depth of Vikram Samvat, he recalled the legacy of Samrat Vikramaditya and his Navratnas, whose ideals of governance, knowledge, and justice continue to inspire India even today. He further noted that, as per ancient belief, Lord Brahma initiated the creation of the universe on this sacred day, making it one of the most revered beginnings in Indian tradition.
In a strong citizen-centric message, Mayor Joshi called upon the people of Chandigarh to transform the spirit of Nav Varsh into a mass movement for a cleaner, greener, and smarter city. He urged residents to adopt zero-waste practices, ensure segregation at source, avoid single-use plastic, and actively participate in building a sustainable Chandigarh.
“This is not just a celebration, but a resolve — to align our governance with our cultural roots and our city’s future with collective responsibility,” the Mayor asserted.
The celebration concluded on a note of unity and pride, reinforcing the Municipal Corporation’s commitment towards cultural revival, citizen engagement, and accountable governance.
This first-ever celebration of Vikram Samvat within the MC Office has set a new precedent, symbolising that Chandigarh is not only progressing as a modern city but also staying deeply connected to its civilisational ethos.
