Chandigarh, 5 February: The Department of Music at Mehr Chand Mahajan DAV College for Women organised a five-day workshop on ‘Basics of Guitar’. The workshop aimed to provide hands-on training in fundamental techniques of guitar playing while nurturing an appreciation for instrumental music among students.

The workshop commenced with an introductory session wherein the resource person familiarised participants with the basic structure of the guitar, its essential parts, different types of guitars, string names and numbering, and various playing styles. This foundational session helped students develop a clear understanding of the instrument before progressing to practical learning. Subsequently, students were guided through basic guitar exercises designed to improve finger strength, flexibility, and clarity of sound. A practical demonstration of Sargam on the guitar was also conducted, enabling students to comprehend its application and interpretation on the fretboard, thereby bridging classical musical concepts with instrumental practice. As the workshop advanced, students explored the E minor chord family, including C major and D major chords. Applying this knowledge, participants practised and performed popular songs, which helped them effectively relate theoretical concepts to practical song performance.

Officiating Principal Ms. Neena Sharma appreciated the initiative of the Department of Music and remarked that such workshops play a vital role in enhancing students’ creative expression, confidence, and musical proficiency, while providing them with valuable experiential learning opportunities.
