Chandigarh, 8 September 2026: The Health Committee and NSS Units of Mehr Chand Mahajan DAV College for Women, Sector 36-A, Chandigarh, in association with the Department of Ophthalmology, Government Medical College & Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, Chandigarh, organised an Awareness Session on Eye Donation at the college’s Multimedia Hall as part of National Eye Donation Fortnight (25th August - 08th September). The session witnessed enthusiastic participation from around 150 students, along with teaching and non-teaching staff members.
The resource person, Prof. S. K. Arya, Department of Ophthalmology, GMCH, Sector 32, delivered an informative and engaging talk on the significance of eye donation. He elaborated on the procedure of eye donation, eligibility criteria, and common myths and misconceptions associated with the process. He also highlighted how a single act of eye donation can help restore vision and bring hope to a visually impaired person. Encouraging the students to pledge their eyes, he urged them to spread awareness about the cause among their families and communities.
The session was followed by an interactive question-and-answer segment, during which students actively participated and sought clarifications regarding the eye donation process and related concerns.
Speaking on the occasion, Principal and Convener Ms Neena Sharma appreciated the collaborative efforts of the Health Committee, NSS Units and the Department of Ophthalmology, GMCH, in organising the socially relevant initiative. She lauded the enthusiastic participation of the students and remarked that such programmes play an important role in nurturing social responsibility, compassion and a spirit of community service among young learners. She encouraged the students to come forward and pledge their eyes and inspire others to contribute to this noble cause. She also expressed her gratitude to Prof. S. K. Arya for sharing his valuable expertise and congratulated the organising team for the successful conduct of the session.
