Chandigarh, September 9, 2026:The two-day Under-17 Boys & Girls Wrestling Tournament commenced today at Manimajra Sports Complex, organised by the Sports Department, Chandigarh Administration with around 155 young wrestlers from Chandigarh competing across various weight categories. The tournament is being held on September 9 and 10, 2026, to provide young wrestlers with competitive exposure and encourage sporting talent at the grassroots level.

On the opening day, young wrestlers delivered strong performances across different weight categories. In the Girls’ 49 kg category, Harshita of Government Model High School, Manimajra advanced to the final after winning her bouts, while Rashi of Government Model School, Sector 20 also put up a strong performance.

In the Girls’ 40 kg category, Garima of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Manimajra; Tejaswini of DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8C; Yashoda of Government Model High School, Indira Colony; and Zoya of DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8C, advanced to the semi-finals.

In the Girls’ 43 kg category, Sonam, Yashaswini, Ranjana and Pooja secured places in the semi-finals following commendable performances in their respective bouts.

In the Boys’ 51 kg category, Divyanshu of Government Senior Secondary School, Manimajra; Ashish of Government High School, Manimajra; Roshan of Government School, Sector 21; and Sanchit of Raipur Kalan, advanced to the semi-finals.

To recognise sporting excellence and motivate young athletes, the first, second and third position holders in the respective weight categories will be awarded cash prizes of ₹5,000, ₹3,000 and ₹2,000, respectively.

The opening-day bouts were witnessed by Shri Gurminder Singh, Senior Hockey Coach, and Shri Darshan Lal, Retired Wrestling Coach, who appreciated the performances of the participating wrestlers and encouraged the young athletes to continue pursuing excellence in sports.

The Sports Department, Chandigarh Administration is providing young sportspersons with opportunities for competitive exposure, skill development and performance, while focusing on identifying, nurturing and encouraging sporting talent at the grassroots level.
