Chandigarh, 18 September: Postgraduate Department of Mathematics at Mehr Chand Mahajan DAV College for Women, organised a national seminar on ‘Recent Developments in Mathematics: Insights and Applications’, sponsored by Dean, College Development Council, Panjab University, Chandigarh. The seminar brought together academicians, researchers and students to deliberate upon emerging developments and applications in various areas of mathematics.
The programme was graced by Prof. Yajvender Pal Verma, Registrar, Panjab University, as the Chief Guest. Dr. Surinder Pal Singh Kainth, Chairperson, Department of Mathematics, Panjab University, and Prof. Sushil Kumar Tomar, Department of Mathematics, Panjab University, were the Guests of Honour.
The keynote address was delivered by renowned mathematician Prof. Madhu Raka, NASI Senior Scientist and Professor (Retd.), Department of Mathematics, Panjab University. Highlighting the contributions of eminent women mathematicians from India and across the world, Prof. Raka inspired the young participants to pursue excellence in mathematics. She emphasised the significance of rational thinking, hard work and consistency as essential attributes for achieving success in the discipline. The invited speakers- Dr. Sugandha Maheshwary, Assistant Professor, Department of Mathematics, IIT Roorkee; Dr. Amit Prakash, Assistant Professor, Department of Mathematics, NIT Kurukshetra; and Dr. Arti Pandey, Associate Professor, Department of Mathematics, IIT Ropar, shared valuable insights into contemporary areas of mathematical research. Their sessions covered recent trends in group algebra, computation, algebraic codes, fractional calculus in science and engineering, and graph optimisation problems, providing participants with an overview of the evolving applications of mathematics in research and interdisciplinary domains. The seminar witnessed active participation of 79 researchers, faculty members and students from different parts of the country. As many as 14 participants presented their research work during two parallel technical sessions, which were chaired by Dr. Dilbagh Singh and Dr. Gagandeep Singh, Assistant Professors, Department of Mathematics, Panjab University, Chandigarh. The technical sessions provided a platform for scholarly exchange and discussion on contemporary mathematical research.
Officiating Principal Ms. Neena Sharma said that such academic initiatives provide students and researchers with valuable opportunities to engage with contemporary developments in their respective disciplines. She added that the seminar reflected the institution’s commitment to fostering research, innovation and meaningful academic collaboration, while encouraging young learners to explore the wider applications of mathematics.
