World Environment Day: MC Chandigarh holds special sensitisation meeting on Solid Waste Management Rules 2026

Chandigarh, June 5:- Commemorating World Environment Day, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh today organised a special meeting of all elected Councillors to sensitise stakeholders on the provisions of the Solid Waste Management (SWM) Rules, 2026, directions of the Hon’ble Supreme Court, and the collective responsibility of citizens and public representatives towards environmental protection and sustainable waste management.

The meeting was chaired by Sh. Amit Kumar, IAS, Municipal Commissioner, and attended by Sh. Jasmanpreet Singh, Senior Deputy Mayor, Smt. Suman Devi, Deputy Mayor, Municipal Councillors, Sh. Balbir Raj Singh, Joint Commissioner, Sh. Sanjay Arora, Chief Engineer, Dr. Inderdeep Kaur, Medical Officer of Health, and other senior officers of the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh.

Marking the significance of World Environment Day, the Municipal Commissioner highlighted that effective waste management and environmental conservation go hand in hand and are essential for safeguarding the health and well-being of present and future generations.

A detailed presentation was made on various provisions of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, with particular emphasis on the mandatory implementation of four-stream source segregation of waste, scientific collection and transportation systems, resource recovery, recycling, and sustainable disposal practices.

The meeting also deliberated upon the directions issued by the Hon’ble Supreme Court regarding solid waste management and discussed strategies for ensuring compliance through greater public participation and stakeholder engagement.

As part of the city's World Environment Day observance, it was decided to intensify ward-level awareness and outreach programmes to educate citizens about the objectives of Swachh Bharat Mission–Urban (SBM-U) 2.0, including visible cleanliness, source segregation, waste processing, scientific disposal of municipal waste, project implementation, and remediation of legacy waste.

Addressing the meeting, the Commissioner, emphasized that environmental protection cannot be achieved through government efforts alone and requires active participation from every citizen. He urged Councillors to act as ambassadors of environmental stewardship in their respective wards by promoting responsible waste management practices and encouraging behavioural change among residents.

The Commissioner further stated that World Environment Day serves as a reminder of our collective duty to preserve natural resources, reduce pollution, and build cleaner, greener, and more sustainable cities. He stressed that proper segregation and scientific management of waste are among the most effective measures for reducing environmental degradation and mitigating the impacts of climate change.

The elected representatives and officers reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening environmental initiatives across the city and working collectively towards making Chandigarh a national model for sustainable urban development and scientific waste management.

The meeting concluded with a pledge to promote environmental awareness, strengthen waste segregation at source, and ensure effective implementation of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, in the larger interest of environmental sustainability and public health.

MC Chandigarh marks World Environment Day with free health check-up camp for employees

Chandigarh, June 5:- Commemorating World Environment Day, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh organized a Free Health Check-up Camp for its employees in collaboration with Jeena Sikho Ayurveda Clinic & Hospital at the MC premises today.

The camp was inaugurated by Sh. Amit Kumar, IAS, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation Chandigarh, in the presence of Dr. Inderdeep Kaur, Medical Officer of Health, senior officers, and staff members.

The initiative aimed at promoting preventive healthcare and encouraging a healthy lifestyle among employees. A large number of staff members participated and availed themselves of comprehensive health screening services, including blood pressure monitoring, body health assessment, medical consultations, and free diagnostic tests such as CBC, KFT, LFT, and Lipid Profile.

Special therapies for diabetic patients, wellness counselling, and an awareness demonstration on safe drinking water through an innovative water treatment device were also conducted.

The Commissioner emphasized the importance of regular health check-ups and appreciated the initiative, reaffirming the Corporation’s commitment to building a healthier workforce and a cleaner, greener Chandigarh.

MC Chandigarh plants trees across city on World Environment Day

Chandigarh, June 5:- Marking World Environment Day with a strong message of environmental responsibility, Municipal Corporation Chandigarh organized a city-wide tree plantation drive under the theme “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam.” The initiative aimed to enhance Chandigarh’s green cover and inspire citizens to contribute towards a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable environment.

The drive was led by MC Commissioner Sh. Amit Kumar, IAS, along with Chief Engineer Sanjay Arora, councillors, and senior officers of the Corporation. Saplings were planted at various locations across the city, symbolizing a collective commitment to environmental conservation.

Addressing participants, the Commissioner emphasized that every tree planted today is an investment in the future and urged residents to actively support plantation and conservation efforts.

Chief Engineer Sh. Sanjay Arora reaffirmed the Corporation’s commitment to preserving Chandigarh’s green legacy.

The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from councillors, residents, community groups, and MC employees, reinforcing the spirit of shared responsibility for protecting the environment and ensuring sustainable development for future generations.

Chandigarh Strengthens Solid Waste Management; Special Cell reviews SWM Rules compliance

Chandigarh, June 5:- In a significant step towards strengthening environmental sustainability and ensuring effective waste management, a meeting of the Special Cell constituted for the implementation of the Solid Waste Management (SWM) Rules, 2026 was held today under the chairpersonship of Ms. Isha Kamboj, SDM (South), Chandigarh.

The meeting was attended by Sh. Balbir Raj, Joint Commissioner, MC Chandigarh, Sh. Sanjay Arora, Chief Engineer, Dr. Inderdeep Kaur, Medical Officer of Health and other senior officers of the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh.

The Special Cell has been constituted in compliance with the directions of the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India to monitor, review and ensure the effective implementation of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026 across the Union Territory of Chandigarh.

During the meeting, a comprehensive review of ongoing solid waste management activities was undertaken. Discussions focused on strengthening waste collection, source segregation, transportation, processing and scientific disposal of municipal solid waste. Department-wise progress was assessed and officials were directed to ensure strict adherence to the provisions of the SWM Rules, 2026.

Chairperson Ms. Isha Kamboj emphasized the importance of coordinated action among all departments and stakeholders for achieving sustainable waste management practices and maintaining Chandigarh’s high standards of cleanliness.

She directed concerned officials to expedite pending tasks and submit regular progress reports to facilitate effective monitoring and timely implementation of all prescribed measures.

Chandigarh, June 5:- Marking World Environment Day with a strong message for environmental conservation, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh organized a public awareness campaign at Apni Mandi, Sector 46, to encourage citizens to shun single-use plastics and adopt sustainable lifestyles.

The programme was led by MC Joint Commissioner Sh. Balbir Raj Singh in the presence of area Councillor Sh. Gurpreet Singh Gabi, Municipal Corporation officials, vendors, and local residents. As part of the campaign, participants carried placards bearing slogans such as “Say No to Plastic” and “I Hate Polythene,” spreading awareness among shoppers and vendors about the harmful impact of plastic waste on the environment.

Addressing the gathering, the Joint Commissioner emphasized that reducing dependence on polythene bags is crucial for preserving the city’s ecological balance and ensuring a cleaner, greener Chandigarh. He urged citizens to switch to reusable cloth bags and adopt environmentally responsible habits in their daily lives.

The awareness drive also highlighted the key provisions of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, focusing on waste segregation at source, scientific waste disposal, and active community participation in cleanliness initiatives. Municipal officials interacted with vendors and visitors, encouraging them to become partners in the city’s sustainability efforts.

MC Chandigarh intensifies enforcement drive; 67 challans issued, illegal activities curbed across city

Chandigarh, June 5:- Continuing its sustained enforcement campaign against encroachments and unauthorized commercial activities, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh today carried out intensive drives in various parts of the city.

During a special operation at the Car Bazaar in Sector 13, Manimajra, nine vehicles being illegally displayed and sold by car dealers in public parking spaces were impounded. The action was taken to ensure the free use of public parking areas and prevent unauthorized commercial occupation.

Simultaneously, enforcement teams conducted drives against unlicensed vendors operating in Sectors 20, 21, 18 and 19, Industrial Area Phase-II, and Kuda Ali Sher village. Several violations related to unauthorized vending and encroachment of public spaces were detected during the inspections.

As part of the day's enforcement activities, a total of 67 challans were issued for various violations. The Municipal Corporation reiterated its commitment to maintaining public order, ensuring compliance with municipal regulations, and keeping public spaces free from unauthorized activities. Such drives will continue regularly across the city to uphold civic discipline and improve urban management.
