Anti-encroachment drive by MCC in Burial Village & Sector 45; dumped cars removed & 42 Challans issued

Chandigarh, May 23:- In a decisive step to reclaim public land, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh carried out an anti-encroachment drive today in Burial Village and Sector 45.

Following the directions of Sh. Amit Kumar, IAS, Commissioner, MC Chandigarh, the operation targeted illegal occupation and dumping of vehicles on Municipal Corporation land.

During the drive, 23 abandoned cars, 2 motorcycles, and various other vehicle parts including car seats, doors, and jacks were removed from the site. These items had been illegally dumped or left unattended, occupying valuable public space and causing inconvenience to residents.

A total of 42 challans were issued to violators in Burial Village and Sector 45 under relevant Municipal regulations.

Municipal Commissioner issued a strict warning, stating that encroachment on public land will not be tolerated. He emphasized that similar enforcement actions will continue and legal proceedings will be initiated against repeat offenders throughout city.

“The city’s public spaces must remain accessible and clean. No one has the right to misuse public land for personal gain,” said the Commissioner.

This drive is part of the broader initiative to maintain order, improve urban aesthetics, and ensure fair use of public property across Chandigarh.

MCC Finance and Contract Committee for revenue generation through promoting art & culture activities in 17 plaza

Chandigarh, May 23:- The 352nd meeting of the Finance and Contract Committee (F&CC) of the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh was held today under the chairpersonship of city Mayor Smt. Harpreet Kaur Babla. The meeting was attended by MC Commissioner Sh. Amit Kumar, IAS, and other committee members including Sh. Gurpreet Singh, Sh. Jasmanpreet Singh, Sh. Saurabh Joshi, Smt. Suman Devi, along with senior officers of the MCC.

Key discussions were held during the meeting focused on innovative revenue generation measures and civic infrastructure improvements. The committee proposed promoting art and cultural activities at Sector 17 Plaza during weekends. It was suggested that the open space could be rented out to event organizers for conducting cultural programs and exhibitions, thus transforming the plaza into a vibrant community hub while generating additional Municipal revenue. Officers were directed to explore and present actionable plans for the same.

In another major discussion, the committee reviewed smart solutions for managing paid parking lots across the city. Detailed deliberations were held to enhance public convenience and streamline parking services through technological interventions.

The committee also revised the professional fee structure for advocates handling legal matters related to the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC). The new fixed fee has been set at Rs. 3,000 per case to assist the Nodal Officer in the District & Sessions Court in the Tricity and other related courts. This is a revision from the earlier fee of Rs. 5,000 per case.

Additionally, the committee approved a rough cost estimate of Rs. 10.55 lakhs for the provision and laying of a new water supply pipeline to the newly constructed judge houses in Sector 10, Chandigarh.

The meeting concluded with the committee reaffirming its commitment to efficient governance and public services in the city.

Site identification completed around STP Diggian and STP Maloya for ‘Women for Trees’ Campaign

Chandigarh, May 23:- As part of the Amrut Mitra initiative – ‘Women for Trees’, a site identification exercise was successfully carried out today around Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) at Diggian and Maloya in Chandigarh for the plantation drive under the campaign ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’.

While sharing about the campaign, Sh. Amit Kumar, IAS, Commissioner, MC Chandigarh said that this green initiative focuses on mobilizing community participation, especially among women, to strengthen urban green cover and promote environmental consciousness. The campaign, dedicated to honouring mothers through tree plantation, is aligned with national efforts toward sustainable urban living under the AMRUT (Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation) scheme.

He said that the teams from the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh, along with representatives from local women's self help groups and environmental volunteers, surveyed the premises and adjoining areas of the STPs to identify suitable locations for planting indigenous and environment-friendly tree species. These sites were selected keeping in mind ecological sustainability, adequate sunlight, soil health, and accessibility for maintenance.

The Commissioner further said that the identified zones will host plantation drives in the coming weeks, coinciding with the monsoon season for optimal plant survival. Special emphasis was being placed on the involvement of local women residents, aiming to instill a long-term sense of ownership and care for the trees planted.

“This campaign isn’t just about planting trees; it's about building a living tribute to our mothers while actively contributing to a greener, healthier city,” said the Commissioner.
