*General Elections to Elect the Members of MC Dinanagar, MC Gurdaspur, MC Qadian, and MC Sham Chaurasi to be Held on 13 June: State Election Commission, Punjab*
Chandigarh 26 May 2026:In pursuance to the Notification no. 03/01/Elections(S-2)/MEB/2026/78 dated 21.05.2026, issued u/s 13-A of the Punjab Municipal Act, 1911, by the Department of Local Government, Punjab, the State Election Commission Punjab announces the dates for the conduct of general elections to elect the members of MC Dinanagar, MC Gurdaspur, MC Qadian, and MC Sham Chaurasi.
As per the election schedule, the period for filing nomination papers will start from 30.05.2026 (Saturday) between 11:00 A.M. to 03:00 P.M. in the O/o of the concerned Returning Officer designated for the purpose. The last date for filing nominations will be 03.06.2026 (Wednesday) upto 03:00 P.M. Scrutiny of the nominations will take place on 04.06.2026 (Thursday). The date for withdrawal of nominations will be 05.06.2026 (Friday) by 03:00 P.M. Elections to these Municipal Councils shall be held on 13.06.2026 (Saturday) from 08:00 A.M. to 04:00 P.M. The Counting of the votes will take place on the same day immediately after the completion of poll.
The Commission has made all the logistical arrangements to conduct these elections in a free, fair and peaceful manner.
With the announcement of the election schedule, the Model Code of Conduct has come into force with immediate effect in the jurisdiction of the Municipal Councils where the elections are going to be held. It will remain in force till the completion of the election process.

SC Commission takes suo moto notice of Raja Warring's statement
Chandigarh, May 26:Punjab State Scheduled Castes Commission Chairman Jasvir Singh Garhi has taken suo moto notice of the viral video of Congress Party President Amarinder Singh Raja Warring.
Giving information in this regard, Jasvir Singh Garhi said that Cabinet Minister Baljit Kaur brought to the notice of the Commission that Congress Party President Amarinder Singh Raja Warring has used caste-based words against Dalit castes during the election campaign. Regarding which the Commission has sought a report from Senior Superintendent of Police Sri Muktsar Sahib on May 29, 2026 through SP Sri Muktsar Sahib and has also directed the police to get the voice sample of Amarinder Singh Raja Warring taken and get the report submitted to the Commission for forensic examination.

*Total 63.94 % Voter Turnout for Municipal General Elections 2026*
CHANDIGARH, 26 May 2026:A total 63.94% votes polled in the Punjab Municipal general elections 2026. Voting took place to elect representatives for various municipal corporations, municipal councils, and nagar panchayats.
Polling began early in the morning at 8:00 AM under tight security arrangements and saw a steady stream of voters throughout the day. Long queues were witnessed outside polling booths in both urban and semi-urban localities, reflecting high civic engagement.
The State Election Commission confirmed that the polling process remained largely peaceful.
State Election Commission thanked the voters of Punjab for their enthusiastic participation in strengthening local self-governance. They also commended the polling staff, security personnel, and local administrations for the successful conduct of the democratic exercise.
