Chandigarh, August 15, 2026:The Government Rehabilitation Institute for Intellectual Disabilities (GRIID), Chandigarh, celebrated the 80th Independence Day with patriotic fervour and enthusiasm, highlighting its continued efforts towards the inclusion, empowerment and rehabilitation of persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The celebration was led by Dr. Ravneet Kaur, Director Principal, GMCH and Director, GRIID, who hoisted the National Flag at the institute premises. The ceremony began with the National Song “Vande Mataram”, followed by the National Anthem. Dr. Ajeet Sidana, Joint Director, GRIID; Shri Anil Kumar, Principal, GRIID; Dr. M. Karuppasamy, Course Coordinator, GRIID College of Special Education; and Ms. Ramanjot, In-charge, GRIID Clinic, along with staff, students, faculty members, parents and other participants, joined the celebrations.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Ravneet Kaur extended Independence Day greetings and emphasised the values of freedom, unity, equality and social responsibility. She said that the true spirit of independence lies in building an inclusive society where persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities have equal opportunities to participate, contribute and live with dignity.

Highlighting GRIID’s achievements, Dr. Kaur said that more than 100 persons with intellectual disabilities have been placed in open employment in various organisations, including Swaraj Engines, Taj Hotel and Dev Darshan Dhoop, Chandigarh, among others. She said these efforts are helping persons with disabilities achieve greater economic independence, social inclusion and meaningful employment.

She also highlighted the educational and professional initiatives of GRIID, including the role of the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) in expanding educational opportunities for children with intellectual disabilities. She also mentioned the International Conference organised at GRIID in collaboration with the Haryana Yog Aayog, which provided a platform for professionals, academicians and other stakeholders to share knowledge and experiences.

Dr. Kaur further highlighted the achievements of GRIID students in Special Olympics Bharat, including winning a silver medal, and appreciated their dedication and sporting spirit. She also spoke about the services provided through the GRIID Clinic, where beneficiaries receive assessment, therapeutic and rehabilitation services. Efforts towards facilitating Unique Disability ID (UDID) Cards for eligible persons with disabilities were also highlighted.

Highlighting the work of the GRIID College of Special Education, she mentioned various academic and co-curricular initiatives, including NSS activities, CRE programmes, community engagement and placement initiatives. She appreciated the successful placement of college trainees in government and private-sector positions in Chandigarh and neighbouring states, enabling them to build careers in special education and rehabilitation.

The celebration featured a colourful cultural programme presented by GRIID students and staff. A patriotic group song was presented jointly by students of the GRIID School, College of Special Education and staff members. It was followed by energetic group dance performances by students of the GRIID School and College of Special Education.

Ayush presented a graceful solo Pahari dance, while Aanya enthralled the audience with a solo dance performance. A major highlight was the fusion dance by GRIID School students, which showcased their confidence, creativity and talent.

The performances reflected GRIID’s commitment to nurturing the abilities of persons with intellectual disabilities and providing them opportunities for participation, self-expression and holistic development.

The programme concluded with the presentation of awards to special children and GRIID employees in recognition of their achievements, dedicated efforts and active participation. Sweets were also distributed among students, staff and other participants.

The Independence Day celebration conveyed a strong message of patriotism, inclusion and empowerment, reaffirming GRIID’s commitment to creating a society where every individual is valued, respected and provided meaningful opportunities to contribute to the progress of the nation.
