Chandigarh, 16 February: The Postgraduate Department of Sociology at Mehr Chand Mahajan DAV College for Women organised a vibrant cultural event titled ‘Abhivyakti: Expression of Diverse Art and Culture’. The event aimed to celebrate our nation’s rich cultural diversity while fostering cultural exchange, understanding, and appreciation of the varied traditions, attire, cuisine, languages, and artistic expressions that define India. Through a thoughtfully curated series of activities, students presented a living tableau of unity in diversity.

A major highlight of the programme was the traditional attire showcase, where students represented regions across the country- from Kashmir to Kanyakumari and from the North-East to Western India, through their distinctive traditional clothing. The display beautifully reflected the richness, variety, and uniqueness of regional identities. The cultural performances added charm to the event. Students presented dance performances inspired by regional forms such as Manipuri, Rajasthani, Himachali Nati, Bengali, Lavani, Bhangra, Giddha, and classical traditions. Musical performances further enriched the celebration. Students rendered solo songs in multiple languages and styles, including Punjabi folk traditions, Bangla, Hindi, Dogri, and compositions influenced by the Jaipuri gharana, showcasing India’s vast linguistic and musical heritage. Poetry recitations in Bangla, Hindi, Dogri, Punjabi, and other languages expressed cultural emotions, regional identities, and social themes with depth and sensitivity. Adding a sensory dimension to the celebration, regional cuisine stalls curated by students represented diverse regions such as Manipur, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Haryana, South India, Maharashtra, and Punjab. Each stall was thoughtfully decorated with traditional elements and served authentic regional delicacies. The event concluded on an uplifting note, leaving the audience mesmerised by the vibrant cultural mosaic on display. The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from approximately 550 students, making it a grand celebration of India’s cultural plurality.

Officiating Principal Ms. Neena Sharma appreciated the efforts of the Department of Sociology and commended the students for their creativity, collaboration, and cultural pride. She added that true to its title, ‘Abhivyakti’ became a powerful expression of India’s cultural diversity and reinforced the spirit of ‘Vividhta mein Ekta’ which defines the essence of our great nation.
