CHANDIGARH,17.04.23-Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) is the minimaly invasive replacement of a diseased aortic valve by means of catheter support, which is performed through the groin of the patient. It is recommended in elderly patients who are not suitable for open heart surgery due to associated comorbid illnesses.

Prof Dr Rajesh Vijayvergiya from the Department of Cardiology, PGI successfully performed the TAVI procedure on an elderly lady using the US FDA-approved balloon-expandable valve along with a brain/cerebral protection device. The cerebral protection device, which is recently available in the Indian market is effective for the significant reduction of brain stroke during the TAVI procedure.
