Of the 334 principals recruited for Delhi government schools by the UPSC, nearly 100 belong to government schools under Delhi’s Directorate of Education (DoE). Post declaration of results yesterday evening, Education Minister Ms. Atishi met the newly appointed principals on Thursday and congratulated them.
While congratulating the principals Ms. Atishi said, “It is a matter of great pride that of the total principals recruited by the UPSC from all over the country, nearly one-third are from DoE schools and are much aware of the vision of the government. As a government, it is our duty to facilitate our teachers with required training at various levels and support them, but our teachers have adopted the culture and vision really well and achieved a major goal in their lives. From here on, as a principal, they have a bigger role to play in Delhi’s education revolution and contribute to the brighter future of children studying in Delhi government schools.”
She further said, “The dominance of Delhi’s team education in UPSC confirms what we always knew: our teachers are the best in India!”
The Education Minister also added that it is due to the persistent efforts of Chief Minister Shri Arvind Kejriwal that on 24th April 2021, a notification was issued for the appointment of 363 principals and the last date for filling out the form was 29th July, 2021. After this, the written examination was conducted by UPSC on 17th July, 2022. In 2023, the interviews were conducted in the last week of January and the first week of February. The results for the same were declared yesterday. The entire recruitment process was completed in less than 2 years and the number of newly appointed principals is also 7 times more than last time.
While sharing their experiences, the newly appointed principals said that the innovative approach to providing national as well as international exposure to government schools teachers and various teacher development programs of the Delhi government has helped them in their professional development and has filled them with confidence to transform the public education system.
Shri Susheel Jain who topped the UPSC selection list for principals in the male category said, “I have been working as Head of the School in Sarvodaya Vidyalaya, Bhalsawa village. It has been a long journey with DoE schools and the variety of exposure that I have received here has helped me discover my capabilities to bring change to the education system. I also went to Singapore for training recently and the amount of knowledge I have received regarding the latest education trends there was huge for me. Whenever we go out or even in the UPSC interview the confidence given to us by the government is visible in us.”
Smt. Neelam Yadav one of the selected principals said, “I have 17 years of experience in DoE and later I was deputed at SCERT. There are many others who have been selected as principals from SCERT too. So far, we have been part of planning in SCERT and assessing issues on the ground. Since we have knowledge of both the phases, we will work better and bring in policies that will transform education space in Delhi further.”
Shri Mandeep, another selected principal said, “I am working in DoE for the past 26 years and started as a primary teacher. Delhi government’s ‘Mission Buiyaad’ is the project which I would want to focus in the future as well. I would like to ensure that all our primary sections become well-versed in the foundational skills.”
It is to be mentioned here that, the vacancies for principals in Delhi government schools were declared for 363 posts, against which 334 principals have been appointed by the UPSC and one-third of them are from DoE schools working as teachers and vice principals. Also, the top three ranks have also been taken by the DoE school teachers and vice-principals in both male and female categories.
