Chandigarh, November 7: The Department of Environment, Chandigarh Administration alongwith NSS Wing of Govt. Home Science College, Chandigarh & Yuvsatta-NGO launches a Green Diwali Campaign as part of Swacch Bharat Abhiyan and also COVID response.

In this initiative at two places of Government Press Chowk, Sector 18 and Sukhna Lake, Chandigarh, Ramlila Artists Ram, Sita & Laxman of Jagriti Ramlila Committee, Sector 23, Chandigarh presented masks and sanitizers to general public and NSS students of Home Science College students along with volunteers of Yuvsatta carried placards with message of Green Diwali Awareness Campaign and Swacch Bharat Abhiyan.

Appreciating the endeavour Mr. Debendra Dalai, Director, Department of Environment said that with the growing recognition of the impacts of Diwali on the environment, especially in these COVID pandemic times, several groups have started to reinterpret the rituals and traditions to become more sensitive to life and nature. And resultantly more and more people are seeing bursting firecrackers as environmentally irresponsible form of entertainment.

Mr. Dalai further added that “we are not against the traditional way of celebrating Diwali in which the homes are decorated with earthen Diya’s, candles, people eat homemade sweets, gifting friends and relatives plants instead of adding to the race of consumerism. He expects that, as always, residents of Chandigarh will behave responsible in these festival times.
