NEW DELHI,24.07.20-With the monsoon hitting the door, the festive vibe has also started to knock up .The monsoon season is tied up with lot many festivals celebrated in an array of sweet and savoury delicacies .The teej festival is around the corner .

There are three kinds of Teej celebrated throughout the year: Hariyali Teej, Karjari Teej and Hartalika Teej. This year Hariyali Teej falls on 23rd July 2020

Hariyali Teej is an important sacred women festival celebrated mainly in North India states of Haryana, Rajasthan , Uttar Pradesh, Bihar , Rajasthan , Delhi,MP and Chhattisgarh besides migrants peope of these states living in various parts of the country. The festival celebrated with a lot of enthusiasm, , zest and gusto falls on the third day of the first fortnight of the auspicious month of Shravan

After the hot summer, the rains are welcomed with the Teej festival. There are other “Teej Vrats,” like Hariyali Teej and Kajari Teej, but the Hartalika Teej is considered the most important. The festival is specially for women, both married and unmarried, when they pray to the Goddess Parvati. They keep a fast adorn hands and feet with mehndi and dress up with glass bangles, bindis and beautiful clothes. These are all part and parcel of the festival.

Give yourself a manicure and pedicure the day before the ritual of applying mehndi. In fact, after soaking the hands and feet in warm water, massage with a rich cream, so that the skin is smooth and soft. A good pick-me-up treatment for the hands is to rub them with sugar and lemon juice.

In the olden days, “ubtan” was made at home for bridal skin care. This consisted of wheat bran (choker), gram flour, yogurt or cream of milk (malai) and a pinch of turmeric. All these were mixed together and applied on the body, along with oil. The “ubtan” was washed off after 20 to 30 minutes, while bathing. It helped to cleanse the skin, leaving it smooth and bright.

Ubtan, therefore, is a traditional method of removing dead epithelial cells, softening the skin and enhancing skin beauty. When it is washed off with water during the bath, it helps to remove dead skin cells, making the skin soft and smooth. It also helps to remove tan and produce an even colour tone. Actually, the body should first be massaged with sesame seed (til) oil. Did you know that sesame seed (til) oil has sun-protective properties and counteracts sun-damage? After the oil massage, “ubtan” may be applied and then washed off after half an hour, while bathing. The washing off and scrubbing away of the ingredients, leaves the skin clean, bright and glowing, with a translucent quality.

Exfoliation is an important treatment for body and face, as it helps in the removal of cellular build-up on the skin surface, improving skin texture, accelerating the cell renewal process, minimizing dark patches and producing an even colour tone. It is a powerful cleansing procedure too and keeps the pores free of hardened oil. You can try out the traditional “ubtan” with these simple kitchen ingredients. Take wheat bran (choker), add ground almonds, ground dried orange and lemon peels, along with honey and curd, as well as a little turmeric. Mix all these into a paste that does not drip. Apply on the body and wash it off after half an hour.

For the face, you can mix a mask at home. Mix two teaspoons wheat bran (choker) with one teaspoon each of almond meal (ground almonds or badaam), curd, honey and rose water. You can add dry and powdered mint (pudina) leaves. It is supposed to add a glow to the skin. Mix everything together into a paste and apply on the face, avoiding the lips and area around the eyes. Wash it off after 30 minutes.

Or, try a quick “pick-me-up” face mask, which leaves your skin clean and glowing. Cleanse the skin. Mix honey with egg white and apply it on the face. Wash off with water after 20 minutes. For those with very dry skin, mix honey with egg yolk and a little milk. Leave it on for half an hour and rinse off with water. It leaves the skin very soft and glowing. After washing off the pack, give the skin a compress with the rose water soaked cotton wool pads.

For dry skin, you can also mix half a teaspoon honey, one teaspoon rose water and one teaspoon dried milk powder. Mix into a paste and apply on the face. Remove after 20 minutes with water.

After removing the mask, you can apply cold compress on face with chilled rose water and cotton wool pads, to add a glow, refresh and remove fatigue. Wipe the face with it and then pat briskly. For dull and tired eyes, dip cotton wool pads in rose water and use as eye pads over closed lids. Lie down and relax for 10 minutes. It helps to remove fatigue and brighten the eyes. The fragrance of rose has a calming effect on the mind.
