CHANDIGARH,02.07.20-This Monday, I went to Sector 29 MC Nursery to buy 100 fruit plants at 12 morning. Six persons were playing cards, five or six were sitting idle. I asked about the incharge, they tell he has gone for lunch. The head Mali said they have only some desi varieties of Mango and Jamun, which they can’t distribute before 31st July.
Then I visited Sector 23 Nursery, which didn’t have even 100 fruit saplings. Even these were purchased from Saharanpur. That means these more than dozen of nurseries, horticulture Department, forest department etc are unable to cater to the demand of plants of City public and people have to depend on private nurseries for their needs. Is Green Chandigarh action plan of planting 2.50 lac saplings just a paper plan??

I fully doubt if these MC and forest nurseries are giving any income to MC or the administration. Such big chunks of valuable land are going waste and are a drain on exchequer. Why spending taxpayers money on these nurseries, if you have to buy your own requirements from market. It’s better to give these on lease to private institutions and NGO’s and earn handsome amour as lease money and utilise these hundreds of acres of white elephants, for the real purpose of greenery.
